The scientific battle against COVID-19 is accelerating thanks to charitable donations, President Alice Gast writes in the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Philanthropic gifts can unlock multiple, sometimes radical, approaches as we race to understand coronavirus,\u00a0she argues in the paper<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Such\u00a0gifts have helped Professor Robin Shattock<\/a>\u00a0as he develops a vaccine:<\/p>\n

“Professor Shattock spent days of precious lab time applying, lobbying and cajoling for funding to move his vaccine forward. Fortunately, donors stepped up to bridge the funding gap before the\u00a0UK government contributed a further \u00a322.5m<\/a>\u00a0last month to take the vaccine through phase II trials.”\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Professor Gast also highlighted the contributions the global philanthropy Community Jameel<\/a>\u00a0which founded\u00a0J-IDEA<\/a>, the Abdul Latif Jameel Institute of Disease and Emergency Analytics, led by\u00a0Professor Neil Ferguson<\/a>, one of the world’s most influential epidemiologists.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“A few months ago, the night before we launched<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Jameel Institute for Emergency and Disease Analytics (J-IDEA)<\/a>\u00a0at Imperial\u2019s School of Public Health, leaders of another academic group supported by Community Jameel, this one in Massachusetts \u2014 the\u00a0Jameel Poverty Action Lab, J-PAL<\/a>, at MIT \u2014 were announced as the winners of the Nobel Prize in economics. It was appropriate recognition of the impact that J-PAL had already had on reducing poverty for millions of people around the world.
