The Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL<\/a>) marked its first anniversary in May 2018, promising to continue to work for educational reform and transformation around the world.<\/p>\n

Based at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and funded through a generous gift from MIT alumnus Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel<\/a> \u201978, J-WEL promotes excellence in primary and higher education, and workplace learning.<\/p>\n

J-WEL Executive Director Vijay Kumar said: \u201cThis is just the beginning.\u00a0 It has been an exciting year, pointing to both the tremendous opportunity for making an impactful educational difference globally as well as the hard work ahead to realize it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

MIT President Rafael L. Reif acknowledged J-WEL\u2019s role in helping MIT \u201ccarry out the biggest aspiration we have \u2013 to educate as many people in the world as possible\u201d. <\/em><\/p>\n

\"FadyFady Mohammed Jameel<\/a>, President of Community Jameel, praised the organization\u2019s first 12 months. \u00a0He said: \u201cWe are acutely aware of the importance of transforming education and learning at all levels, and equipping individuals \u2014 both young and of working age \u2014 with the skills and abilities needed for the future.\u00a0 This means schools, universities, educational environments, and employers working together with one common goal.\u00a0 J-WEL\u2019s focus populations include learners in the developing world, those underserved by education such as women and girls, a growing displaced population that includes refugees, and a workforce in need of STEM knowledge and skills<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

In its first year, J-WEL hosted two member gatherings on the MIT campus.\u00a0 Branded as \u2018J-WEL Weeks\u2019, the events attracted more than 220 attendees from 30 countries.\u00a0 J-WEL has also awarded grants of almost US$ 500,000 to MIT faculty to fund educational innovation and research.<\/p>\n

MIT Vice President for Open Learning Sanjay Sarma said: \u201cJ-WEL is quickly becoming MIT\u2019s platform for educational transformation with the world, not just for digital learning, but for any kind of educational change<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n
