{"id":41040,"date":"2019-06-24T10:28:51","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T10:28:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/news\/new-name-next-chapter-j-wafs-changes-name-to-reflect-breadth-of-capability-and-impact\/"},"modified":"2019-10-30T10:58:43","modified_gmt":"2019-10-30T10:58:43","slug":"new-name-next-chapter-j-wafs-changes-name-to-reflect-breadth-of-capability-and-impact","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/new-name-next-chapter-j-wafs-changes-name-to-reflect-breadth-of-capability-and-impact\/","title":{"rendered":"New name; next chapter: J-WAFS changes name to reflect breadth of capability and impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Security Lab at MIT (<a href=\"http:\/\/jwafs.mit.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J-WAFS<\/a>) has changed its name to the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food <em>Systems<\/em> Lab. \u00a0A new tagline, <em>\u201cSecuring humankind\u2019s vital resources\u201d<\/em> accompanies the new name.<\/p>\n<p>The change, announced in September, is to reflect the broader range of food and water challenges the lab\u2019s research focuses on.<\/p>\n<p>The terms \u201cfood system\u201d or \u201cwater system\u201d refer to the diverse array of activities, resources, and technologies\u2014as well as policies and economics\u2014involved in the production, processing, transport, and consumption or use of food and water.<\/p>\n<p>This includes water and food security, generally defined as providing people with access to sufficient clean water and safe and nutritious food, as well as issues such as food and water safety, access to fertilizer, water purification, climate change, and the sustainability of our water supplies and food production systems.<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"30%\">\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2736\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/1-mit-john-lienhard_0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" \/><\/td>\n<td width=\"70%\"><em>\u201cOur goal in this name change is to even more accurately represent what we already do,\u201d<\/em> said J-WAFS\u2019 director, Professor John Lienhard.<\/p>\n<p><em>We considered various terms that reflect the range of water and food sector issues that we focus on:\u00a0 supply, safety, solutions, sustainability\u2026 \u2018systems\u2019 was a clear winner for conveying the comprehensive perspective and breadth of our work across the Institute.\u201d<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Established in 2014, J-WAFS works to advance knowledge and innovation to build resilient systems that can deliver safe and adequate supplies of water and food for our changing world.<\/p>\n<p>It has funded innovative research projects from all five schools at MIT. Well over 10% of all MIT faculty\u2014from disciplines as diverse as mechanical engineering, chemistry, and anthropology\u2014have submitted proposals for J-WAFS funding.<\/p>\n<p>To date, two companies have spun out of MIT as the result of J-WAFS support, and millions of dollars of follow-on funding have been raised by the recipients of J-WAFS\u2019 seed grants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":41049,"template":"","tags":[],"newscategory":[150],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>J-WAFS Changes Reflect Breadth of Capabilities | Abdul Latif Jameel\u00ae<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"The Abdul Latif Jameel Water &amp;
