{"id":41184,"date":"2019-06-24T10:41:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T10:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/news\/jameel-arts-centre-entices-and-excites-crowds-after-novembers-grand-opening\/"},"modified":"2020-05-14T12:47:21","modified_gmt":"2020-05-14T12:47:21","slug":"jameel-arts-centre-entices-and-excites-crowds-after-novembers-grand-opening","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/jameel-arts-centre-entices-and-excites-crowds-after-novembers-grand-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Jameel Arts Centre entices and excites crowds after November\u2019s grand opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum officially opens new building after an 18-month construction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More than 13,000 visitors flocked to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jameelartscentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jameel Arts Centre<\/a> within days of its opening in November 2018, <a href=\"\/en\/news\/art-jameel-set-continued-growth-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Art Jameel<\/a> has revealed. \u00a0The 10,000m<sup>2<\/sup>, three-storey space is set to become a central part of the Middle East\u2019s arts scene, creating a new cultural hub for the region and displaying the scale of its ambition with a series of eye-catching exhibitions and programs in its first weeks of operation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GQ5ZJWrke7I\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<table class=\" alignleft\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"25%\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3097\" style=\"margin-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/opening.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"132\" \/><\/td>\n<td style=\"vertical-align: top;\" width=\"75%\">The Centre, which was officially opened on Thursday, November 8, 2018, by His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, saw its galleries immediately reach their full capacity. <em>\u201cWe were forced to limit access, with queues forming around the building,\u201d<\/em> said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/antonia-carver\/\">Antonia Carver<\/a>, Director of Art Jameel.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Plans for the Jameel Arts Centre were originally revealed in March 2017. \u00a0Both construction and costs were kept on target, culminating in November\u2019s grand opening in front of a packed audience of high-profile guests from the worlds of art, business, philanthropy and politics. \u00a0Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, the UAE Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, provided a fascinating welcome speech while exhibitions featuring 40 different artists were also displayed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3239\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FA27_full-width-body2_750px.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/W2p6_ap25oc\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Ms Carver said<em>: \u201cFive years of planning and building, and 1.4 million hours, have gone into creating the Jameel Arts Centre. We are thrilled and overwhelmed by the incredible response &#8211; from international museum directors and art-world colleagues to the \u2018curious\u2019 of the UAE.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cArt Jameel\u2019s mandate is all about supporting artists and providing access to the arts for all; we couldn\u2019t have hoped for a better way to debut our first Centre. We\u2019d like to thank our Government and private sector partners, as well as the community-at-large, for supporting us in bringing this dream alive.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Situated at the tip of Dubai\u2019s Culture Village, with views overlooking the Dubai Creek, the Jameel Arts Centre also welcomed directors and curators of the V&amp;A, British Museum, Delfina Foundation, Whitechapel Gallery, and Royal College of Art (all London); Louvre, Centre Pompidou, Musee Rodin, and Mus\u00e9e D\u2019Orsay (all Paris); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Getty, Los Angeles; Aga Khan Museum, Toronto; and Ashkal Alwan and National Museum, Beirut.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSuZ8XHqiJM\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On its first public opening, more than 300 teens from across the Emirates \u2013 many of whom were making their first visit to any museum \u2013 were given guided tours. \u00a0Other artist-, curator- and architect-led tours were available to adult throughout the rest of the week.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RMKEqBFqaxE\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Among the highlights was the regional premiere of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studioroosegaarde.net\/project\/waterlicht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WATERLICHT<\/a>, an immersive light installation by renowned Dutch artists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studioroosegaarde.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daan Roosegaarde<\/a>; Crude, a group exhibition curated by Murtaza Vali contemplating oil in both historic and contemporary contexts; and solo shows from four eminent artists from the Middle East and Asia \u2013 Maha Malluh, Lala Rukh, Chiharu Shiota, and Mounira Al Solh.<br \/>\nThe Jameel Arts Centre will make history not just for its exhibitions, but for its determination to make the arts and cultural life more accessible to all.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3098\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/3-View-of-the-Jameel-Library-in-the-Jameel-Arts-Centre-Dubai-Courtesy-Art-Jameel-560x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"536\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">By housing the <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/first-public-access-arts-library-united-arab-emirates-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jameel Library<\/a>, the UAE\u2019s first open-access contemporary art library and resource centre, it will provide a collection of almost 3,000 books, journals, catalogues and theses for general consumption.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A further demonstration of the Jameel Arts Centre\u2019s vision is provided by the <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/building-youth-community-jameel-arts-centre-dubai-gathers-next-generation-creative-leaders-pioneering-youth-assembly\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth Assembly<\/a>, a pioneering peer-to-peer program running until April 2019, in which the next generation of creatives will produce a series of exhibitions and events geared specifically towards those aged 18-25.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3099\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/youth_assembly.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Jameel Arts Centre was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.serie.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Serie Architects<\/a> and features a 300 m<sup>2<\/sup> open-access research centre, an outdoor sculpture area, a caf\u00e9, a restaurant, and a bookshop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Getting There<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jameel Arts Centre is open-access and free for all. \u00a0Visitors are requested to stop at the Welcome Desk to register and pick up a map to explore the Centre, courtyards and the surrounding park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Centre has a number of facilities to make visits more enjoyable and convenient. Jameel Arts Centre has free WiFi throughout the building for visitors to remain connected as well as luggage check at the Welcome Desk and lockers for easy touring. \u00a0It is also equipped with male and female Faith Rooms on the Ground level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jameel Arts Centre is located in Jaddaf Waterfront, nestled between Business Bay Bridge and Garhoud Bridge on the Bur Dubai bank of the Dubai Creek.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Public Transport<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Jameel Arts Centre is a 12-minute walk from Al Jadaf metro station (Green Line).
