The recent \u2018J-WEL Week<\/em>\u2019 at the <\/span>Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/a><\/span>, hosted by the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL)<\/a>, sought to address how education can be utilized to address significant global challenges, including socioeconomic inequality<\/span><\/span> and economic development. <\/span><\/p>\n

In one workshop, a \u2018hackathon\u2019 held by education leaders centered on the global skills gap: the growing chasm between the skills required by employers and those actually possessed by prospective employees \u2013 and the very real impact of not addressing this challenge now.<\/span><\/p>\n

The global skills gap manifests in many ways, from a shortage of workers with specific technical skills, to a lack of candidates with the \u201csoft skills\u201d \u2014\u00a0what J-WEL refers to as \u201chuman skills<\/em>\u201d \u2014 employers are demanding, such as creativity and persistence. The root of the problem, however, is universal.<\/p>\n

During the event, Bill Bonvillian, director of a research project on workforce education at MIT Open Learning, stated:<\/p>\n

\u201cWorkers don\u2019t know what skills they need, educators don\u2019t know what skills to educate for, and employers don\u2019t know what skills workers have.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

J-WEL, which was created three years ago in cooperation with Community Jameel<\/a>, is organized into three distinct collaboratives \u2013 pK-12, Higher Education, and Workforce Learning. October\u2019s hackathon, in which participants designed solutions to the school-work disconnect, took place on the Workforce Learning track.<\/p>\n
