The\u00a0Council for the Arts<\/a>\u00a0at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (CAMIT) has appointed as a member Fady Jameel<\/a>, President, International of\u00a0Community Jameel<\/a>\u00a0and Founder and Chairman of Art Jameel<\/a>. The appointment recognises the unique contribution Fady has made to both MIT and to the arts in general.\u00a0Founded in 1972, CAMIT aims to act as a catalyst for the development of a broadly based, highly participatory programme in the arts, firmly founded on teaching, practice, and research at MIT, and to conduct arts-related fundraising activities on behalf of MIT.<\/p>\n

The ties between MIT and Community Jameel run deep \u2013 from the 25-year-old\u00a0Jameel-Toyota Scholarship<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab<\/a>\u00a0(J-PAL), the cofounders of which, Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, won the Nobel Prize in Economics<\/a> last year, plus other labs tackling food and water systems, education and machine learning in health. But the arts lie at a key intersection of that relationship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Most recently, in 2019, the MIT List Visual Arts Center hosted a\u00a0solo exhibition by Farah Al Qasimi<\/a>, who had earlier that year\u00a0exhibited at the Jameel Arts Centre<\/a>\u00a0in Dubai; and Nadia Christidi, a PhD candidate at MIT, became the Jameel Arts Centre\u2019s\u00a0first writer in residence<\/a>. Fady founded\u00a0Art Jameel\u00a0in 2003 with a broad mandate to span heritage preservation through to contemporary art, and to nurture artists and creative communities both locally in the Middle East and globally \u2013 through partnerships such as those with the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Initially an initiative of Community Jameel, Art Jameel has grown to become an independent organisation based at the Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, and the forthcoming\u00a0Hayy Jameel<\/a>, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.\u00a0<\/p>\n

CAMIT supports students from across the Institute with an\u00a0annual grants cycle<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Arts Scholars<\/a>\u00a0programme, which was endowed by the Council. CAMIT members fund the popular\u00a0tickets programme<\/a>, which provides free or subsidised access for MIT students to local arts organisations and performance events, including the Museum of Fine Arts, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Annual donations by CAMIT members fund a\u00a0wide array of programmes<\/a> and arts events at MIT, including the List Visual Arts Center and the MIT Museum, arts awards, visiting artists, concerts, and performances.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":58696,"template":"","tags":[],"newscategory":[150],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"\nFady Jameel -
