{"id":81129,"date":"2020-11-12T12:08:06","date_gmt":"2020-11-12T12:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=81129"},"modified":"2022-05-05T06:46:19","modified_gmt":"2022-05-05T06:46:19","slug":"abdul-latif-jameel-energy-supports-development-of-second-utility-scale-battery-storage-project-in-uk","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-supports-development-of-second-utility-scale-battery-storage-project-in-uk\/","title":{"rendered":"Abdul Latif Jameel Energy supports development of second utility-scale battery storage project in UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li>With 34 MW, Contego in West Sussex, will have a capacity of 68 MWh, using a series of 28 Tesla Megapack batteries.<\/li>\n<li>This is a new joint battery energy storage project between Harmony Energy and FRV.<\/li>\n<li>Abdul Latif Jameel, through FRV, continues its strategic plan of long-term investments in the development of utility-scale battery storage projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (<a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\">FRV<\/a>), part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">Abdul Latif Jameel Energy<\/a> and a leading global developer of <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">renewable energy<\/a> projects, has announced a second battery project in collaboration with UK developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harmonyenergy.co.uk\/\">Harmony Energy<\/a>, as part of a strategic energy storage pipeline to be launched globally.<\/p>\n<p>Construction of the 34 MW \/ 68 MWh Contego project is set to start this month near Burgess Hill in West Sussex, United Kingdom. Once completed in 2021, it will be one of the largest battery energy storage plants in the UK, with a system of 28 Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries, using Tesla\u2019s Autobidder AI software for real-time trading and control.<\/p>\n<p>Contego will be connected to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukpowernetworks.co.uk\/\">UK Power Networks<\/a> distribution network, providing the capability to store energy from renewable sources and afford peak-time flexibility to the UK National Grid as part of the country\u2019s continuing shift away from fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is a new joint battery energy storage project between Harmony Energy, which builds, owns and operates renewable energy assets across the UK, and FRV, following the successful completion of a 7.5 MW \/ 15 MWh battery plant at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energys-frv-harmony-energy-commission-first-megapack-uk-energy-storage-project\/\">Holes Bay, Dorset<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Holes Bay, which also used Tesla\u2019s Megapack batteries, has been operating since June 2020, participating in the EPEX spot market, in the Firm Frequency Response (FFR) and in the Balancing Mechanism.
