{"id":15592,"date":"2018-08-16T11:17:12","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T11:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/?post_type=perspective&#038;p=15592"},"modified":"2022-10-18T09:47:50","modified_gmt":"2022-10-18T09:47:50","slug":"winds-change-global-energy-revolution","status":"publish","type":"perspective","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/perspective\/winds-change-global-energy-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"Winds of change in global energy revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>A new report from the Global Wind Energy Council highlights the continued advance and commercial viability of wind energy around the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Global Wind Energy Council\u2019s (<a href=\"https:\/\/gwec.net\/\">GWEC<\/a>) <em>\u2018Global Wind Report: Annual Market Update 2017\u2019<\/em>, published in April 2018, reveals how wind installations are taking root at the centre of the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">renewable energy<\/a> industry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/wind-power-solutions\/\">Wind energy<\/a> will form a crucial part of the ambitions laid out in the Paris Agreement, the UN climate change agreement signed in 2016, which aims to ensure the unavoidable rise in global temperatures is constrained to below 2\u00b0C through positive action by government and industry.\u00a0 To achieve this goal, the renewable share of the world\u2019s energy supply must rise from 15% today to 65% by 2050<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The GWEC report highlights many reasons to be positive.\u00a0 Economic reality is advancing wind energy\u2019s cause far more effectively than any public relations campaign could hope.\u00a0 In North and Latin America, North Africa, and India, tenders are being submitted at US$ 0.03\/kWh, while a recent tender in Mexico dipped below US$ 0.02\/kWh.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed<em>, \u201ctoday wind power is the most competitively priced technology in many if not most markets worldwide<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><strong>[2]<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d<\/em> according to GWEC. It adds: <em>\u201cWind power is in a rapid transition to becoming a fully commercialized, unsubsidized technology; successfully competing in the marketplace against heavily subsidized fossil and nuclear incumbents.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than US$ 107 billion was invested in wind energy in 2017, with 52GW of wind installations being put in place \u2013 taking global wind installations up to a total of 539GW.\u00a0 Between 2007 and 2016, wind energy installations around the world leapt by 399.2%<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15593 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Steve-Sawyer-300x289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Steve-Sawyer-300x289.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Steve-Sawyer-150x145.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Steve-Sawyer-768x741.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Steve-Sawyer.jpg 796w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Steve Sawyer, secretary general of GWEC, says: <em>\u201cWind power is leading the charge in the transition away from fossil fuels, and continues to blow away the competition on price, performance and reliability.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>Both onshore and offshore, wind power is key to defining a sustainable energy future<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><strong>[4]<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Several countries are making significant wind energy advances.\u00a0 Denmark, for example, generated 44% of its 2017 electricity from wind as well as adding a further 342GW of installations<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>.\u00a0 Uruguay used wind to generate more than 30% of its electricity, while Portugal, Ireland, Spain, and Germany generate approximately 17%-25% of their electric power through wind.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrea Fontana, managing director (Europe) of Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), part of Abdul Latif Jameel Energy, belie<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15594 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Andrea-Fontana-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Andrea-Fontana-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Andrea-Fontana-105x150.jpg 105w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Andrea-Fontana.jpg 350w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/>ves several advances are contributing to the positivity surrounding wind energy. \u00a0He said: <em>\u201cThere\u2019s no doubt the wind sector is very competitive. \u00a0We saw that in the public tenders of 2017, where the trend towards ever lower cost of energy was confirmed. \u00a0Equipment performance and capacity has increased substantially, while installation, operation and maintenance costs have been reducing, which all contribute towards a more competitive pricing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cIn lots of tenders, wind and solar must compete against each other \u2013 and wind has shown now that it can compete. \u00a0Wind energy is definitely cost-competitive and, in some cases, it is more competitive than conventional energies, so it can compete in the tender process without any subsidies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Building a future based on innovation and efficiency<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the drive towards ever lower tender prices is adding new pressures on developers, Andrea remains positive. <em>\u201cLower prices put pressure on returns.\u00a0 But that\u2019s not necessarily bad,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cIt forces everybody to become more efficient.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He adds: <em>\u201cIt forces creativity and efficiency not just from the developer or investor, like FRV, but all the stakeholders \u2013 from landowners, technology suppliers, investors and sponsors through to advisors and lenders. \u00a0FRV isn\u2019t afraid to compete, and we think wind becoming a mature and less-subsidized industry is a positive development.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cAs we develop our own projects, we\u2019ll have to become even more competitive and even more efficient. \u00a0But we\u2019ve been developing projects for the last 11 years, so we\u2019re probably in a good position to tackle this challenge and really pursue efficiency in everything we do.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Analysis from GWEC suggests that global wind installations will show a marked increase in 2019 after a relatively stable 2018. \u00a0\u201c<em>It\u2019s very hard to predict, because it\u2019s closely linked to global policies,\u201d<\/em> says Andrea. \u00a0<em>\u201cBut it is our expectation that installations will pick up again in 2019, particularly in developing countries like India and China, and mature regions with new targets, such as Europe, which is currently setting its goals for 2030.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A global outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The rise of wind power is not restricted to any single area: it is a worldwide phenomenon.\u00a0 In 2017, every region of the world made significant progress on its total wind installations.\u00a0 The installed capacity of Africa and the Middle East rose by 15.9%.\u00a0 In Asia, it jumped by 12%, while Europe (up 10.4%), Latin America (up 16.8%) and North America (up 8%) also made considerable developments in their wind generating capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-powering-ahead-in-india\/\"><em>India<\/em><\/a><em> is another market with great potential for wind energy,\u201d<\/em> says Andrea.\u00a0 <em>\u201cIt is extremely competitive and there are now many experienced and well-established local players.\u201d<\/em> \u00a0Although profit margins are tight for overseas operators and the Indian regulatory landscape is complex and highly challenging, Andrea says that FRV has discussed partnership opportunities with Indian turbine manufacturers and will continue to track possible entry points into the Indian market.<\/p>\n<p>Another area of significant potential highlighted in the report is Latin America, and particularly Argentina.\u00a0 <em>\u201cIf the [Argentinian] market continues to develop as it has over the past two years,\u201d<\/em> says GWEC\u2019s Annual Market Update 2017<em>, \u201cthere will be more investments to come.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>FRV is one of a number of major players sizing up opportunities in the country: <em>\u201cWe\u2019ve been watching closely how the renewable market is coming up there,\u201d<\/em> says Andrea.\u00a0 <em>\u201cThe capacity factor in certain areas of Argentina is just amazing compared to the rest of the word.\u00a0 In the southern part of the country, you have constant stable and strong winds throughout the entire year. \u00a0The things that need to be considered carefully, however, are the returns and the bankability. \u00a0We\u2019ve seen that financing is available, especially for wind projects, but the level of returns is not as high as in some other markets.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_15595\" Photographed from Cerro San Cristobal at sunset.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>FRV is also increasingly active in the wind energy markets of other countries in Latin America. \u00a0It already has a presence in <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-power-nearly-quarter-million-homes-chile-solar-wind-energy\/\">Chile<\/a>, where it is developing a hybrid solar-wind project to generate 540GWh per year<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>, and is actively following potential opportunities in Colombia, Peru and Uruguay (which increased its total wind installations by 295GW, or 24.4%, in 2017 alone<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe<\/em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15596 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Wind-power-263x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"263\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Wind-power-263x300.png 263w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Wind-power-131x150.png 131w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Wind-power.png 677w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><em> think the combination of solar and wind is definitely going to become more common in the future,\u201d<\/em> says Andrea. \u00a0<em>\u201cSolar and wind work very well together: solar has a daily production, while wind \u2013 in many cases \u2013 can complement that with night-time generation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>It provides you with a 24-hour generation core, which is normally preferred ahead of day-time only facilities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Harnessing wind power in the MENAT region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As part of Abdul Latif Jameel Energy, FRV is also looking to the positive impact it can have on <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/renewable-energy-meeting-saudi-arabias-2030-ambitions\/\">Saudi Arabia<\/a>, its citizens and its communities.\u00a0 While the country\u2019s solar power potential has long been acknowledged around the world, Saudi Arabia also enjoys ideal conditions for wind energy plants.<\/p>\n<p>In the northeast and central regions, as well as those near mountains in the west, wind energy plants have the ideal environment in which to operate profitably.\u00a0 At all three locations, average wind speeds are 33% higher than that needed for the commercial success of a wind installation<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Andrea explains<em>: \u201cIn Saudi Arabia, the National Renewable Energy Program sets out the government\u2019s ambitions very clearly. It is determined to diversify from its reliance on oil as a source of energy, which makes it a very good investment environment for renewables.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cWe\u2019ve been analyzing both the solar and the wind tenders that were issued during 2017, and we\u2019ll continue our analysis and assessment of the market. \u00a0We\u2019re watching closely all the programs that are being issued by the Saudi Arabian government through its Ministry of Energy.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of opportunities elsewhere in the Middle East and across Asia, too, he says, such as Lebanon, Pakistan, and Egypt.\u00a0 <em>\u201cWe\u2019ve seen that the Council of Ministers in Lebanon has approved a new round of wind projects.\u00a0 Pakistan also has a very attractive market, and we\u2019re aware the authorities there will soon launch a new wind power tender.\u00a0 That\u2019s something we\u2019re analyzing closely.\u201d<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Wind-speed.png 1285w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FRV: a growing pipeline in renewable installations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whether it is in Latin America, the MENAT region, or elsewhere, FRV is clear about its ambitions. \u00a0<em>\u201cSo far, our wind energy pipeline has around 1.1GW in a very advanced stage: the land is secured, the wind measurement campaign has already launched, a wind mast is collecting wind data, and inter-connection and environmental pre-feasibility studies are performing,\u201d<\/em> explains Andrea. <em>\u201cWe\u2019re at that stage in Mexico, for example, and in the coming months our target is to consolidate our pipeline in Mexico and make sure we\u2019re in position to bid in the coming wind tender.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>\u201cIn <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-power-nearly-quarter-million-homes-chile-solar-wind-energy\/\"><em>Chile<\/em><\/a><em>, we have around 140MW in a project under development, and we\u2019re also securing 100MW in Europe and finalizing a joint development agreement.<\/em><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-15598 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Windmills-213x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Windmills-213x300.png 213w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Windmills-106x150.png 106w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2018\/08\/Windmills.png 588w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>In Europe it\u2019s slightly different because it\u2019s a mature market and we started our wind activities only a couple of years ago. \u00a0Because it\u2019s a mature market, it\u2019s easier to enter into projects that are already under development, rather than start from scratch in the same way we have done in less mature markets like <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-secures-financing-mexican-solar-farm-will-power-150000-homes\/\"><em>Mexico<\/em><\/a><em> and Chile.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As technology continues to advance and prices consistently fall, the Global Wind Energy Council is confident that wind energy \u2013 and hybrid installations that also harness solar power \u2013 offer an increasingly bright vision of the world\u2019s future energy mix.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Annual Market Update report, <em>\u201c<\/em><em>The emergence of wind\/solar hybrids, more sophisticated grid management and increasingly affordable storage begin to paint a picture of what a fully commercial fossil-free power sector will look like<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><strong>[10]<\/strong><\/a>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Through Fotowatio Renewable Ventures, Abdul Latif Jameel Energy will be at the forefront of this clean energy revolution,
