for a cleaner, greener future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How will the world\u2019s energy mix change over the next 30 years, and which new technologies look set to have the biggest impact on meeting a growing energy demand?<\/p>\n<p>As the global population continues to expand and increasing urbanization drives dramatic changes to the way we live and work, how will the energy sector adapt to the new pressures it faces? \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-38240 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/BP-Energy-Outlook-150x104.jpg\" alt=\"BP Energy Outlook 2019\" width=\"150\" height=\"104\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bp.com\/en\/global\/corporate\/news-and-insights\/press-releases\/bp-energy-outlook-2019.html\">BP Energy Outlook 2019<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>, global energy demand increases 33% by 2040.\u00a0 But there are also fundamental shifts in the energy mix to meet that demand, with renewables contributing half of the primary energy growth and coal\u2019s share of power generation falling from 40% in 2017 to just 20% by 2040.<\/p>\n<p>Indications of this transition to lower carbon fuels have been long visible and the rise of renewables is now beyond doubt.\u00a0 In 2019 alone, the solar photovoltaic (PV) market, for example, is set to experience dramatic growth.\u00a0 By the end of December, it is expected to be up 25% year-on-year \u2013 with a 43% increase outside China<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a>. \u00a0If these expectations are fulfilled, 129 GW of solar installations around the world will be helping to forge a cleaner energy future<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> for all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-38247 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trilemma-106x150.png\" alt=\"World Energy Trilemma Index\" width=\"106\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trilemma-106x150.png 106w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trilemma.png 212w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 106px) 100vw, 106px\" \/>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldenergy.org\/\">World Energy Council\u2019s<\/a> published their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldenergy.org\/publications\/2018\/trilemma-report-2018\/\">Trilemma Index<\/a> which ranks countries\u2019 energy performance on three dimensions, Energy Security, Energy Equity, and Environmental Sustainability, and is derived from modelling global and national data.<\/p>\n<p>The latest results suggest where a coherence and cohesive integrated policy approach can help deliver well-calibrated energy systems in this global transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Managing and maintaining this balance between security, equity and sustainability with a rapid conversion to decentralized, decarbonized, and digital systems is daunting: and not without risks.\u00a0 In 2018 the Report shows that although many countries are managing this delicate balance well, just eight nations a given a top AAA balance rating and with their long history of respect for the environment, it comes as no surprise that once more Denmark, Switzerland and Sweden are at the top.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-38254 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Trilemma-Index.png\" alt=\"World Energy Trilemma Index 2018\" width=\"1284\" height=\"1336\" Washington state has recently followed California, Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico to become the fifth state to establish a 100% clean energy target<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>), and India will maintain their status as the top three PV markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38284\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38284\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption PV installations forecast for 2019 will be in Asia Pacific (64%)<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>, where Japan in particular is one of many countries making considerable changes.\u00a0 It aims to achieve an 80% cut in greenhouse gases by 2050, and have 7% of its 2030 power supplied by solar<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>.\u00a0 In Africa and the Middle East, progress is less dramatic, accounting for just 5% of this year\u2019s solar installations, despite enjoying climate conditions that are well suited to PV plants.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38261\" Company)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That is not to suggest that a burgeoning renewables sector is not taking hold across large swathes of the Middle East, however.\u00a0 In April 2020, The Solar Show MENA 2020 and The Wind Show MENA 2020 events will bring together hundreds of speakers and sponsors alongside thousands of attendees<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>. \u00a0The events build on the momentum already present from a series of world-class developments in the region, including the record-breaking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dewa.gov.ae\/en\/about-dewa\/news-and-media\/press-and-news\/latest-news\/2019\/03\/mohammed-bin-rashid-al-maktoum-solar-park\">Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park<\/a> in the United Arab Emirates.\u00a0 When finished, the US$ 13.6 billion plant could power 1.3 million homes and cut CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions by 6.5 million tons per year<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, Phase 3\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-YK7bxjFlf0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12px;\">Video courtesy of Masdar, part of Mubadala Investment Company<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Developments are also moving at pace in Saudi Arabia, with more than 6 GW of wind energy capacity set to be installed over the next decade, contributing almost half (46%) of all wind projects in the Middle East through to 2028<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>. \u00a0At the same time, the Saudi Arabian government aims to have 40 GW of solar energy installed by 2030<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\">[10]<\/a> as it moves to an increased level of economic and energy diversification in line with its <a href=\"https:\/\/vision2030.gov.sa\/en\/node\/87\">Saudi Vision 2030, ambitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet while the widespread adoption of renewable energy is to be encouraged, there is still much more progress to make.\u00a0 The International Renewable Energy Agency (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irena.org\/\">IRENA<\/a>) estimates that carbon dioxide emissions need to fall 70% by 2050 to meet existing climate goals<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a>.\u00a0 Renewables will play a major role in delivering those reductions, accounting for anywhere from 60% to 90% of the necessary fall in CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions while meeting up to 86% of electricity demand over the same timescale<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\">[12]<\/a>.\u00a0 Its analysis also reveals that <em>\u201chealth, subsidy and climate-related savings would be worth as much as US$ 160 trillion cumulatively over a 30-year period\u201d<\/em>.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\">[13]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Developing the necessary infrastructure to ensure renewables become the majority source for electricity will be a sizeable challenge over the next two decades.\u00a0 Through Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (<a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\">FRV<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">Abdul Latif Jameel Energy<\/a> is already playing a crucial role in this exciting sector.\u00a0 FRV is increasing its investments significantly in 2019, with its reach stretching from Australia in the east through to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/awarded-300-mw-solar-project-in-electricity-market-auction\/?id=media_center\">Mexico<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/frv-secures-hybrid-energy-contract-chile\/\">Chile<\/a> in the west. \u00a0By 2024, it aims to have increased its installed capacity eight-fold.\u00a0 And as it continues to develop its energy assets, it remains committed to delivering world-class standards and expertise in every market in which it operates.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38269\" style=\"width: 155px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-38269 \" Jameel<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Australia, FRV is actively involved with six solar projects, having invested substantially in the country\u2019s accelerating transition to renewables since 2012.\u00a0 In November 2018, it signed a power purchase agreement with Snowy Hydro for the production of 67.8 MW of the <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-6th-australian-project-to-supply-clean-energy-to-45000-homes\/\">Goonumbla<\/a> Solar Farm project in New South Wales.\u00a0 When operations begin in June 2020, the plant will supply enough energy for more than 45,000 households.<\/p>\n<p>More recently, FRV\u2019s 100 MW <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-continues-advance-australia-drive-grow-capacity-eight-fold-2024\/\">Lilyvale<\/a> plant \u2013 the company\u2019s second large-scale solar installation in Queensland \u2013 began production in March 2019.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fady-jameel\/\">Fady Jameel<\/a>, Deputy President and Vice Chairman of Abdul Latif Jameel, said: \u201c<em>We are proud to be contributing to Australia\u2019s drive for clean energy<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Spain, where FRV initiated its first moves in the renewables sector 12 years ago, it has reached financial close for the 50 MW La Solanilla Solar Farm in <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-secures-financing-la-solanilla-solar-farm-trujillo-spain\/?id=media_center\">Trujillo<\/a>, the latest in a string of projects across Extremadura, Andalusia, Almeria and Valladolid.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, FRV\u2019s solar expertise is also being harnessed in <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-powering-ahead-in-india\/\">India<\/a>, where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KysNZCdTpKE\">Andhra Pradesh plant<\/a> will power 35,000 homes, and at the soon-to-be-operational 342 MW <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-secures-financing-mexican-solar-farm-will-power-150000-homes\/?id=media_center\">Potos\u00ed Solar Plant<\/a> in San Luis de Potos\u00ed, Mexico, which will supply more than 76,000 homes with clean energy. \u00a0In a further indication of the breadth of its ambitions, its current activities also reach into <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-awarded-55-mw-project-armenia-power-21400-homes\/?id=media_center\">Armenia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-power-nearly-quarter-million-homes-chile-solar-wind-energy\/?id=media_center\">Chile<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-power-120000-homes-generate-435-million-kwh-electricity-per-year-jordan\/?id=media_center\">Jordan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\/en\/projects\/la-jacinta\/\">Uruguay<\/a> and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Abdul Latif Jameel Energy to build Armenia&#039;s first large-scale solar PV encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>However, it is not just the rise of renewables that is changing the energy sector.\u00a0 Energy storage technology, too, is transforming the potential of renewable energy sources to supply consistent, reliable energy even when the sun isn\u2019t shining, or the wind isn\u2019t blowing.<\/p>\n<p>According to research consultancy, IHS Markit, the global energy storage project pipeline already exceeds 63 GW (including <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/storing-up-success-how-batteries-are-revolutionizing-the-global-energy-market\/\">battery<\/a>, mechanical and thermal storage)<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\">[14]<\/a>, while a KPMG report states that the widespread and rapid implementation of solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy plants is <em>\u201ccatalyzing efforts to modernize electricity systems around the world\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\">[15]<\/a>. \u00a0And a key part of this modernization program is the development, introduction and growth of battery storage systems.<\/p>\n<p>One pioneering FRV development in <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/frv-secures-hybrid-energy-contract-chile\/\">Chile<\/a> typifies the step-change that battery storage is predicted to make to consistent, \u2018always-on\u2019 renewable energy generation.\u00a0 FRV is developing a groundbreaking 540 GW\/h <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/hybrid-technologies-power-innovation-water-desalination\/\">hybrid<\/a> solar-wind energy project with integrated battery storage capabilities. \u00a0The project, FRV\u2019s third in Latin America, is the company\u2019s first hybrid wind-solar project and the first to use <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/openingdoors\/article\/storing-up-success-how-batteries-are-revolutionizing-the-global-energy-market\/\">battery storage<\/a>, enabling it to provide 24\/7 renewable power.<\/p>\n<p>Dedicated flexible capacity forecast to rise to 15% of the total power mix by 2050 &#8211; batteries making up around 44% of this.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\">[16]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-18742 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Daniel-176x300.png\" \/>\u201c<\/em><em>When the conditions are not suitable for solar or wind power, the batteries automatically step in and discharge their stored renewable energy, maintaining an uninterrupted supply of renewable energy into the network at all times,\u201d<\/em> explains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/daniel-sagi-vela\/\">Daniel Sagi-Vela<\/a>, CEO of FRV.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, FRV set up a new business unit dedicated to battery-based storage innovations to provide grid management services, improve utilization of renewable assets, and help create innovative new business models in
