{"id":39871,"date":"2019-06-24T07:42:55","date_gmt":"2019-06-24T07:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/perspective\/j-clinic-set-to-revolutionize-disease-prevention-detection-and-treatment\/"},"modified":"2020-12-16T11:31:24","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T11:31:24","slug":"j-clinic-set-to-revolutionize-disease-prevention-detection-and-treatment","status":"publish","type":"perspective","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/perspective\/j-clinic-set-to-revolutionize-disease-prevention-detection-and-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"J-Clinic set to revolutionize disease prevention, detection and treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Transforming medical outcomes for people around the world \u2013 that\u2019s the bold ambition set out for the Abdul Latif Jameel Clinic for Machine Learning in Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/jclinic.mit.edu\/\">J-Clinic<\/a>), the newest collaboration between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Community Jameel<\/a> and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT<\/a>) in Boston.mit.edu<\/p>\n<p>The development of machine learning artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that can revolutionize the prevention, detection and treatment of disease will be put under greater focus than ever when J-Clinic \u2013 the fourth major collaboration between Community Jameel and MIT \u2013 begins its work.<\/p>\n<p>It will concentrate on creating and commercializing high-precision, affordable and scalable machine learning technologies in areas of healthcare ranging from diagnostics to pharmaceuticals, across conditions as diverse as cancer, Alzheimer\u2019s, Parkinson\u2019s, diabetes, kidney disease and asthma.<\/p>\n<p>According to Accenture, the use of AI technologies in the healthcare economy could create annual savings of US$ 150 billion by 2026<sup><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>. Among these savings are US$ 40 billion through robot-assisted surgery, US$ 5 billion through preliminary diagnoses, and US$ 3 billion through automated image diagnoses. If repeated around the world, the scale of the financial impact of AI in healthcare could be colossal. Chandrakasan, Dean of the MIT School of Engineering, has been named as the Chair of J-Clinic. <em>\u201cJ-Clinic will make a difference in patients\u2019 lives everywhere from major hospitals to villages in the developing world,\u201d<\/em> he says. <em>\u201cIt will draw on MIT\u2019s longstanding strengths in biomedical fields, on our decades of collaboration with the concentration of world-class teaching hospitals in Boston, and on our proximity to the world\u2019s major biotech companies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Regina Barzilay and James Collins have been named as J-Clinic\u2019s inaugural Faculty Co-Leads. <em>\u201cToday almost every aspect of our life is driven by machine learning predictions \u2013 be it travel, banking or entertainment,\u201d <\/em>says Barzilay.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><em>\u201cThe only area where we do not benefit from this powerful technology is the one which impacts us the most, our healthcare. The goal of the center is to change it. We aim to bring the best of AI technology we develop in our labs at MIT to hospitals and clinics in the United States and around the world.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Healthcare AI in action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>AI and machine learning technologies are <em>already<\/em> pushing the boundaries of health care into areas that were undreamt of even a decade or two ago.<\/p>\n<p>At the Royal Free Hospital in London, for example, British AI research firm DeepMind has created a tool that analyzes live health data to identify the patients at greatest risk of a sudden and fatal loss of kidney function<sup><a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, AI is already being used in the battle against diabetes, which is estimated to cost the country more than US$ 245 billion each year in medical bills and lost wages<sup><a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>. Virta Health\u2019s combination of a smartphone app, AI software and real-world doctors has helped 87% of patients who had been relying on insulin to control their condition to either decrease their dose or eliminate their use of insulin completely<sup><a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the use of AI is enabling review and translation of mammograms 30 times faster with 99% accuracy, reducing the need for unnecessary biopsies as well as reducing the uncertainty and stress of a misdiagnosis.<sup><a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a><a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>AI has also been found to accurately find specific anomalies on chest CT images between 62% and 97% faster than manual checks, giving radiologists more time to focus on reviews that require greater interpretation or judgement<sup><a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of drug discovery and development, the potential for AI to drastically cut the time and expense of new drug development is clear.<\/p>\n<p>Novartis, Sanofi, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Amgen and Merck are among the pharmaceutical giants to have announced partnerships with AI startups aiming to discover new drug candidates for a range of diseases, from oncology and cardiology<sup><a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>Pfizer is using IBM\u2019s AI technology \u201cWatson\u201d to power its search for immuno-oncology drugs, while Sanofi has signed a deal to use UK start-up Exscientia\u2019s AI platform to hunt for metabolic-disease therapies, and Roche subsidiary Genentech is using an AI system\u2026 to help drive the multinational company\u2019s search for cancer treatments<sup><a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2894\" src=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/06\/j-clinic_launch-event-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>An enduring partnership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MIT and Community Jameel are longstanding partners through three other major collaborations: the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J-PAL<\/a>), which was established in 2003; the Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/jwafs.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J-WAFS<\/a>), which was established in 2014; and the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab, (<a href=\"https:\/\/jwel.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J-WEL<\/a>) which was created in 2017.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have worked together for more than 20 years on a mission to make a better world,\u201d<\/em> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fady-jameel\/\">Fady Jameel<\/a>, President of Community Jameel International.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWith its goal of revolutionizing healthcare around the globe, the launch of J-Clinic opens an exciting new chapter in the shared history of Community Jameel and MIT and builds on the achievements of our many joint projects to date.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>J-Clinic, which will represent a key part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/quest.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT Quest for Intelligence<\/a>, will support education, research projects, workshops and other activities at the intersection of machine learning and biology.
