{"id":42226,"date":"2019-07-22T13:09:49","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T13:09:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alj.com\/?post_type=perspective&#038;p=42226"},"modified":"2021-06-23T07:14:00","modified_gmt":"2021-06-23T07:14:00","slug":"artistic-renaissance-redefining-our-global-presence","status":"publish","type":"perspective","link":"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/perspective\/artistic-renaissance-redefining-our-global-presence\/","title":{"rendered":"Artistic renaissance redefining our global presence"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"p1-style\">\n<p>It\u2019s never been a better time to be an artist \u2013 or an arts enthusiast \u2013 in the Middle East. \u00a0With a rich cultural history, one increasingly unafraid to splice with modern perspectives, the region is attracting the world\u2019s gaze as never before.<\/p>\n<p>Endorsements from some of the world\u2019s most prestigious artistic institutions are testimony to this dramatic upswing in both appetite and output \u2013 helping cement the Middle East\u2019s reputation for incubating creative talent, whether home-grown or international.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42227 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Louvre-AD.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Louvre-AD.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Louvre-AD-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Louvre-AD-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Louvre-AD-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louvreabudhabi.ae\/\">Louvre Abu Dhabi<\/a>, for instance, has graced the UAE since 2017. \u00a0The \u20ac 600m complex covers some 24,000 square meters in Abu Dhabi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saadiyatculturaldistrict.ae\/\">Saadiyat Cultural District<\/a>, and one of its principal goals is to forge a new kind of museum experience \u2013 one that is transnational, and eschews the usual, assumed divisions between East and West.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Saadiyat Island plans also include the <a href=\"https:\/\/abudhabiculture.ae\/en\/experience\/museums\/guggenheim-abu-dhabi\">Guggenheim Abu Dhabi<\/a>, a 30,000 square meter complex designed by Pritzker prize-winning architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foga.com\/\">Frank Gehry<\/a>.\u00a0 The Abu Dhabi government, working with the Guggenheim curators, has been collecting major works by modern and contemporary artists for the past decade, from the Middle East and across the world, in preparation for this vast future museum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42234\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42234\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-42234 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Saadiyat-Island.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"604\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Saadiyat-Island.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Saadiyat-Island-150x91.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Saadiyat-Island-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Saadiyat-Island-768x464.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 10px;\">Image \u00a9 courtesy Gehry Partners LLP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s part of an emerging trend, with the region\u2019s other cultural highlights also growing in stature every year: take Saudi Arabia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ithra.com\/en\">King Abdulaziz Center for Culture in Dhahran<\/a>, for example: this mega-complex, designed by Norwegian architects Snohetta, includes an array of museums within the museum, plus libraries and multimedia venues.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the escalation of arts within the Gulf States, commentator and founder of Barjeel Foundation, Sultan Suood Al Qassemi wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cAn old Arab saying goes, \u2018Cairo writes, Beirut publishes and Baghdad reads.\u2019 These three capitals, along with Damascus, were long the hubs of culture and education in the Arab world. However, over the past few years, as these traditional Arab capitals became more embroiled in civil strife, a new set of cities started to emerge in the Gulf, establishing themselves as the new centers of the Arab world.\u201d<\/em> [1]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond the traditional arts, the wider cultural canvas is also re-energized. \u00a0From the early 2000s, a series of film festivals in the UAE and Gulf tracked, boosted and showcased cinema from the Arab world. \u00a0Until recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dubaifilmfest.com\/\">Dubai International Film Festival<\/a> led the field; it is currently on hold, but just last month, Saudi Arabia announced the Red Sea festival, due to debut in spring 2020 in Jeddah. \u00a0That most cultural of cities, Sharjah, has held its arts biennial since 1993, and recently gave similar boost to the regional \u2013 and global \u2013 literature scene, winning the accolade of World Book Capital 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With world-class exhibition opportunities fostering a greater appreciation of the arts, notable figures have established global reputations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahmedmater.com\/\">Ahmed Mater<\/a> is perhaps Saudi Arabia\u2019s most prominent artist. Working in a variety of media, his art spans photography, calligraphy, painting, installation, performance and video. \u00a0He also wears an administrative hat, advising the government on its expansive plans to boost the arts sector. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mater\u2019s countryman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.widewalls.ch\/auctions\/abdulnasser-gharem\/\">Abdulnasser Gharem<\/a> gained commercial fame when his sculpture <em>Messenger\/Message<\/em> sold for US$ 842,500 at an auction in Dubai in 2011. \u00a0He has since become known as an instigator of arts education in the Kingdom, helping to nurture the next generation of emerging artists. \u00a0When Art Jameel opened its first hub in Dubai last November, the programing team opted to focus some of the exhibitions on women artists from across the region and the world. Saudi pioneer Maha Malluh, featured in one of the Jameel Arts Centre\u2019s solo shows, won plaudits for her bold, monumental installations made from cooking pots, cassette tapes, bread-kneading trays and chinco plates, among other, everyday materials.<\/p>\n<p>Kuwaiti film-maker Monira Al Qadiri, Jordanian audio artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Saudi writer Raja\u2019a Alem (winner of the Arabic Women\u2019s Creative Writing Prize in 2005 [2]) and Kuwaiti author Saud Alsanousi (whose novel The Bamboo Stalk won the IPAF prize in 2013 [3]) are also busy breaking new ground and achieving global recognition for their contribution to the cultural kaleidoscope.<\/p>\n<p>All of which is merely a snapshot of a broader creative trajectory, one set to inspire hearts and minds across the Middle East and beyond long into the future.<\/p>\n<h2>Empowering creativity, breaking down borders<\/h2>\n<p>International audiences are gradually becoming aware of the depth and breadth of Middle Eastern creative tradition and talent \u2013 better late than never. Meanwhile, it\u2019s the visual artists, designers, writers, filmmakers and architects who are redefining perceptions of the region, both locally and globally. \u00a0The Jameel family has a proud tradition, three generations in, of supporting culture and creativity, alongside job creation, education and social welfare. Art Jameel has been part of the movement to nurture creativity since 2003; today we see audiences globally as well as locally enjoying the work of Middle Eastern artists, and in turn, gaining a deeper understanding of this complex, nuanced and richly historical region.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/\">Art Jameel<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-42241 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Art-Jameel-300x117.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Art-Jameel-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Art-Jameel-150x58.png 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Art-Jameel.png 609w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>, founded by the Jameel family, \u2013 supports culture and creativity via its institutions, including the Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai, and the forthcoming Hayy Jameel in Jeddah. Hayy is the Arabic for \u2018neighborhood\u2019 \u2013 truly reflecting the complex\u2019s community-oriented mantra of arts-for-all.<\/p>\n<p>Collaboration is at the heart of art, and is thus reflected in Art Jameel\u2019s international ethos, where creativity is embraced as a tool for breaking down borders. \u00a0As such, major partnerships have been forged to further Art Jameel\u2019s goals, including with <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/collaboration\/the-met\/\">the Metropolitan Museum of Art<\/a> in New York, the <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/collaboration\/princes-school\/\">Prince\u2019s Foundation School of Traditional Arts<\/a>, Delfina Foundation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/collaboration\/v-and-a\/\">the Victoria &amp; Albert Museum<\/a> (V&amp;A), all in London.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jameelartscentre.org\/\">Jameel Arts Centre<\/a> and Hayy Jameel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/antonia-carver\/\">Antonia Carver<\/a> explained they intended to attract a broad spectrum of visitors, both residents and tourists, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re aiming for the two centers to be critically aware and put on the kinds of exhibitions that dialogue with our international counterparts, while appealing to a wide public. \u00a0In the UAE, that public is fantastically diverse and generally interested in discursive work that raises debate.\u201d<\/em> [5]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>A prize example of artistic patronage<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jameelartscentre.org\/\">Jameel Arts Centre<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/centres\/hayy-jeddah\/\">Hayy Jameel <\/a>are just the latest chapters in Art Jameel\u2019s success story \u2013 a story which began with its founding in 2003 as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/\">Community Jameel<\/a>. \u00a0Art Jameel promotes contemporary art, cultural heritage protection, and creative entrepreneurship across the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>A central pillar to Art Jameel\u2019s mission is supporting new, groundbreaking artists from within the region. \u00a0That\u2019s why in 2009 and in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/\">Victoria and Albert Museum<\/a>, Art Jameel established the biennial <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/projects\/jameel-prize\/\">Jameel Prize<\/a> for contemporary art, architecture and design inspired by Islamic tradition.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The V&amp;A explains that the prestigious award aims to <em>\u201cexplore the relationship between Islamic traditions of art, craft and design and contemporary work as part of a wider debate about Islamic culture and its role today.\u201d <\/em>[6]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>First awarded in 2009, the \u00a325,000 contest \u2013 open to artists and designers from any ethnic, religious or cultural background \u2013 has already helped pivot the spotlight towards emerging talent. \u00a0The debut award went to Iranian-born Afruz Amighi for her work \u20181,001\u2019 Pages, a <em>shadowpiece<\/em> created by stencil burners on porous plastic sheets of the kind used in refugee tents. \u00a0Amighi\u2019s works are now exhibited around the world and in 2011 she claimed the New York Foundation for the Arts Scholarship in Sculpture.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later Algerian <a href=\"http:\/\/rachidkoraichi.com\/\">Rachid Kora\u00efchi<\/a> scooped the Jameel Prize for his embroidered cloth banners \u2018Les Maitres Invisibles\u2019, using symbols and ciphers from a range of languages to explore the lives of the 14 great mystics of Islam. \u00a0His latest work, \u2018Les Maitres du temps\u2019, a collection of blue and white canvases exploring our connections to the Earth as a source of life, has drawn admiring crowds at the October Gallery in London.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 it was the turn of Turkish fashion label Dice Kayek (sisters Ece and Ay\u015fe Ege) for \u2018Istanbul Contrast\u2019, a collection of garments evoking Istanbul\u2019s architectural and artistic heritage. \u00a0Dice Kayek now has its own fashion store in the couture capital of the world, Paris.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-42263\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ghulam-Mohammad.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ghulam-Mohammad.jpg 375w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ghulam-Mohammad-150x83.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ghulam-Mohammad-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Ghulam-Mohammad-226x126.jpg 226w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/>Pakistan\u2019s Ghulam Mohammad triumphed in 2016 for his five paper collages, four untitled and one known as \u2018Gunjaan\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/our-people\/fady-jameel\/\">Fady M. Jameel<\/a>, President of Community Jameel International and Chairman of Art Jameel, said that by incorporating second-hand books in his pieces, <em>\u201cMohammad\u2019s intricate collages of paper cuttings of Urdu script pasted on Wasli paper create new meanings and celebrate the great heritage of Islamic art, craft and design.\u201d<\/em> [7]<\/p>\n<p>The most recent talents honored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/event\/jameel-prize-5-exhibition-at-the-va\/\">Jameel Prize<\/a> were 2018\u2019s joint winners, Iraqi artist Mehdi Moutashar and Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum. \u00a0Mehdi was hailed for his works of minimalist abstraction rooted in Islamic geometry; Marina for her visionary Bait ur Rouf mosque. \u00a0Their work was showcased along with six other finalists at the latest Jameel Prize exhibition, which opened in 2018 at the Jameel Arts Centre in Dubai, inaugurated in the presence of Her Excellency Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, Nicholas Coleridge CBE, Chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/\">Victoria and Albert Museum<\/a> (V&amp;A), along with Fady M. Jameel commented that the two organizations shared <em>\u201can ethos that is artist-centric and that is committed to the exceptional power of the arts to generate ideas and facilitate exchange \u2013 between practitioners, between artists and audiences, and between contrasting disciplines and schools of thought.\u201d<\/em> [8]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"
