all (SDG 4) and improving gender equality (SDG 5) are inextricably intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>Despite many decades of activism and reform, across whole swathes of society, women and girls are still currently treated less favorably than men across the world.<\/p>\n<p>They have fewer rights, fewer opportunities, lower pay, lower status.\u00a0 Education is one of the main tools for addressing this indefensible discrepancy.\u00a0 \u00a0Education is the keystone in building a foundation for greater opportunities, greater rewards and a greater contribution to society for everyone. \u00a0It is a vital staging post on the journey to a fairer, more equitable world in which women and girls \u2013 as well as men \u2013 are empowered to achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/w3X9a2f3NPU\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>SDG 4: Quality Education<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG4-banner.jpg\" alt=\"SDG 4 education\" width=\"1378\" not only a catalyst for improving gender equality, it is also a gateway to many other <a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\">UN Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs).\u00a0 In the words of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/\">UNESCO<\/a>, <em>\u201cEvery goal in the 2030 Agenda requires education to empower people with the knowledge, skills and values to live in dignity, build their lives and contribute to their societies.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><em>[1]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-91079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG-4-community-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG-4-community-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG-4-community-150x150.jpg 150w, education and school enrolment rates at all levels, particularly for girls.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, around 260 million children were out of school in 2018<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> &#8211; nearly one fifth of the global population in that age group. \u00a0In addition, more than half of all children and young people worldwide were not meeting minimum proficiency standards in reading and mathematics<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>, and 750 million adults were illiterate, fueling poverty and marginalization.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, COVID-19 made an already bad situation . . . even worse.<\/p>\n<p>As the pandemic spread across the globe, more than 188 countries imposed countrywide school closures, affecting more than 1.6 billion children and young people, or 91% of students worldwide<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\">[5]<\/a>. \u00a0Nearly 369 million children who rely on school meals needed to look to other sources for daily nutrition<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG4-infographic.jpg\" alt=\"SDG4 infographic\" width=\"808\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG4-infographic.jpg 808w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG4-infographic-224x300.jpg 224w, today\u2019s young generation are clear to see.<\/p>\n<p>More than two-thirds of countries have introduced a national distance learning platform, but among low-income countries the share is only 30%. \u00a0Before this crisis, almost one-third of the world\u2019s young people were already digitally excluded<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Never before have so many children been out of school at the same time, disrupting learning and upending lives, especially the most vulnerable and marginalized. \u00a0The consequences are far-reaching and, combined with the pandemic, may jeopardize many of the gains made in recent years in improving global education.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91072\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/ALJ-Education-Gender-Equality-Infographic-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/ALJ-Education-Gender-Equality-Infographic-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/ALJ-Education-Gender-Equality-Infographic-300x212.jpg 300w, benefits<\/h2>\n<p>The benefits of achieving SDG 4, and realizing its integral contribution to the other 16 goals, do not only apply to \u00a0children and young people. \u00a0Adults also benefit enormously from quality education and learning opportunities. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN\u2019s 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Global Report on Adult Learning and Education<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a> showed that adult learning and education produces significant benefits across a range of policy areas. \u00a0Countries reported a positive impact on health and well-being, employment and the labor market, and social, civic and community life.\u00a0 Adult learning and education led to improved health behaviors and attitudes, higher life expectancy and a reduction in lifestyle diseases, with a similar reduction in health care costs. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report also highlighted the significant benefits of investment in adult education for individuals in the labor market, for employers and for the economy more generally. \u00a0In addition, it showed how adult learning and education increases social cohesion, integration, and inclusion, boosts social capital and improves participation in social, civic and community activities.<\/p>\n<h2>Improving accessibility and enhancing opportunity<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/helping-the-next-generation-of-leaders-to-build-their-careers\/\">Jameel Family shares the passion<\/a> of the UN and its vision for education as a cornerstone on the journey towards economic independence and gender equality. \u00a0It recognizes the power of education to drive equal opportunities for all and to release human potential &#8211; because one month\u2019s training can bring a lifetime of work. \u00a0And there is no better way to improve a community than through work.\u00a0 When people have work, they have the ability to contribute to society, they have personal pride, family stability, money to spend and a sense of freedom and self-worth.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we are committed to improving access to quality education for those most in need, through innovations in pedagogy and technology, scholarships, mentorship, and education programs around the world. \u00a0With a commitment to breaking down the barriers that hold back learning, we support teachers and students, entrepreneurs and musicians, providing platforms for individual growth and systems-wide transformation.<\/p>\n<p><img href=\"https:\/\/jwel.mit.edu\/\">J-WEL<\/a>) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/mit.edu\">MIT<\/a>), an initiative of MIT and <a href=\"https:\/\/communityjameel.org\">Community Jameel<\/a>, one the global philanthropies of the Jameel Family, works with member organizations to promote excellence and transformation in education worldwide. \u00a0The lab engages educators, technologists, policymakers, civic leaders, employers, and employees through online and in-person collaborations, workshops, research, and information-sharing events.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PfDxjy9ZX2U\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>J-WEL member organizations work with MIT faculty and staff to address global opportunities for scalable change in education, focusing on three key areas or \u2018collaboratives\u2019:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>J-WEL pK-12<\/strong> is reinventing pre-school, elementary, middle, and high school education to develop communities of the future thinkers and doers of the planet by engaging growing numbers of diverse learners and educators through design, research and implementation of educational innovations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>J-WEL Higher Education<\/strong> is building a community of global leaders that will transform higher education for success of students across the globe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>J-WEL Workforce Learning<\/strong> is working with schools, companies, governments, nonprofits to transform the nature of workforce learning around the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>J-WEL is also one of the founders of the Transforming Refugee Education towards Excellence (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/en\/how-we-work\/education\/transforming-refugee-education-towards-excellence\">TREE<\/a>) program, set up in response to the refugee crises in Syria and beyond.\u00a0 A collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.savethechildren.org\/\">Save the Children<\/a>, the initiative comprises a systems-wide teacher training program that uses compassion to help teachers overcome trauma and deliver effective teaching. \u00a0TREE was launched in 2019 with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/save-the-children-jordan-launches-tree-program-transforming-refugee-education-towards-excellence-to-support-the-educational-process-in-jordan\/\">pilot in Jordan<\/a>, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Community Jameel, Dubai Cares and Hikma Pharmaceuticals.\u00a0 It aims to reach 745,000 Jordanians and Syrian refugees in five years, including school children, parents and teachers.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dV5sp6D7tYc\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another collaboration between Community Jameel and MIT is the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/\">J-PAL<\/a>), which has a specific <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/sector\/education\">education strand<\/a> to its work.\u00a0 J-PAL\u2019s Education sector seeks to improve access to, and the delivery, of high-quality schooling at the primary and post-primary levels through research on issues like pedagogy, teacher training, incentives (for children, for teachers, for families), school governance, early childhood development, and information and communications technology.<\/p>\n<p>Initiatives include research into the use of a computer-based adaptive learning platform for secondary school students in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/evaluation\/disrupting-education-experimental-evidence-technology-aided-instruction-india\">urban India<\/a> to measure the impact of customized learning technology on student test scores; and an evaluation of the effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/evaluation\/returns-secondary-schooling-ghana\">secondary school scholarships<\/a> in Ghana on educational attainment, cognitive skills and life outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>A particular focus of Community Jameel is on making high quality education more accessible to students who many not ordinarily have the ways or means to benefit.\u00a0 One of the ways it does this is through scholarships to deserving students across the globe:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_56416\" Jameel-Toyota scholars come from over 25 countries from across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa and receive financial aid for undergraduate study at MIT. \u00a0The scheme has helped over 190 de Empresa<\/a> (IE), a leading international university in Spain.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\/en\/commitment\/frv-scholarship\/\">Young Talented Leaders Scholarship<\/a> enables <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/tala-samar-awarded-frv-young-talented-leaders-scholarship-at-ie-university\/\">students<\/a> from locations close to FRV developments to study at IE University.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/jordan-students-benefit-frv-scholarships\/\">scholarship<\/a> covers all training and education costs, including tuition fees, accommodation, academic materials, and allowances for travel and meals in Spain during the four-year degree program.<\/p>\n<p>In our home market of Saudi Arabia, we established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/en\/how-we-work\/education\/tanweer-jameel\">Tanweer Program<\/a> for Orphans in 2005 to make a meaningful difference for orphans and brighten their lives. \u00a0It is organized by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameelsaudi.org\/en\/\">Community Jameel Saudi Arabia<\/a> in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Labor and Social Development. \u00a0Tanweer rewards orphan students aged 14-18 who have achieved outstanding academic results with an annual international trip, expanding their cultural horizons and motivating them to continue studying hard at school.<\/p>\n<p>In the creative arts sector, meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/\">Art Jameel<\/a> takes a combined approach to <a href=\"https:\/\/artjameel.org\/learning\/educational-initiatives\/\">education, learning and research<\/a>, with an arts education program that begins at primary age and continues through to post-graduate level. \u00a0Initiatives include Jameel House Online, a program of online workshops inspired by the traditional arts. \u00a0Intended for artists and enthusiasts of all levels, including children, the workshops combine traditional arts with contemporary materials. \u00a0Another online program is <strong>Jaddaf Aloud Online, <\/strong>which is a spin-off from the annual festival at <a href=\"https:\/\/jameelartscentre.org\/\">Jameel Arts Centre<\/a>, Dubai.\u00a0 It is a virtual program that features UAE-based artists designing and leading interactive projects for kids, teens and adults.<\/p>\n<h2>SDG 5: Improving gender equality<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-91107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1378\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-banner.jpg 1378w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-banner-300x69.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-banner-1024x236.jpg 1024w, 1378px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>SDG 4 has a strong gender perspective, linking very strongly to aims and ambitions of SDG 5: Gender equality.\u00a0 The close relationship between education and gender is grounded in evidence showing the close links between girls\u2019 education and social and economic development, including poverty reduction: one additional school year can increase a woman\u2019s earnings by 10% to 20%; each year of secondary education reduces the likelihood of marrying as a child by five percentage points or more; and a child whose mother can read is 50% more likely to live past the age of five<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\">[9]<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The UN states that \u201c<em>gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.\u201d<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><em>[10]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yet to date, only two thirds of the world\u2019s countries have achieved gender parity in primary school enrolment, and just over one third have achieved parity in\u00a0lower secondary enrolment<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\">[11]<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-91121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-stat-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-stat.jpg 399w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>There has been progress over the last decades: \u00a0More girls are going to school, fewer girls are forced into early marriage, more women are serving in parliament and positions of leadership, and laws are being reformed to advance gender equality<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite these gains, however, many challenges remain; challenges that have, in many cases, been worsened by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus outbreak exacerbates existing inequalities for women and girls across every sphere \u2013 from health and the economy, to security and social protection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-91142\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Nafisa-Shams-logo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Nafisa-Shams-logo.jpg 200w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Nafisa-Shams-logo-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Nafisa-Shams-logo-170x170.jpg 170w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Nafisa-Shams-logo-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>The Jameel Family are strong advocates for increased education and opportunities for women.\u00a0 In 2006, it established <a href=\"http:\/\/training.nafisashams.com\">Nafisa Shams<\/a> in its home market of Saudi Arabia to provide women with an integrated work environment to help them produce high quality artisanal products. \u00a0This is achieved through specialized training programs and production lines, including, for example the working from home program, which empowers Saudi women to achieve a balance between family responsibilities and an active role in the job market.<\/p>\n<p>Nafisa Shams has also launched Nafisa Shams Incubator, one of the first female business incubators, with a focus on design and crafts.<\/p>\n<p>J-PAL also has a specific focus on gender.\u00a0 Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/sector\/gender\">gender sector<\/a> produces cross-cutting insights on promoting gender equality and women and girls\u2019 empowerment, and on how norms related to gender affect the outcomes of social programs.\u00a0 One project involved evaluating the teaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.povertyactionlab.org\/evaluation\/teaching-girls-negotiation-skills-zambia\">girls in Zambia<\/a> to negotiate health and educational decisions with authority figures in their lives.\u00a0 Researchers found that girls who were taught negotiation skills had better educational outcomes in the following three years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-91114\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-infographic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"785\" height=\"1025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-infographic.jpg 785w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-infographic-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-infographic-115x150.jpg 115w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/08\/SDG5-infographic-768x1003.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/>The success of Nafisa Shams builds on the achievements of Bab Rizq Jameel (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameelsaudi.org\/en\/Community\">BRJ<\/a>) or \u2018beautiful gateway to prosperity\u2019 in Arabic, which was set up three years earlier in 2003.\u00a0 BRJ helps young women and men in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Morocco to find work.\u00a0 It matches people to jobs and helps create opportunities for employment as a step towards economic independence.\u00a0 Today, BRJ includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.babjameeljobs.com\/EN\/\">BRJ Recruitment<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brjmf.com\/en\/Bab-Rizq-Jameel-Microfinance-offers-loans\">BRJ Microfinance<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/brjservices.com\/\">BRJ Services<\/a>, and it offers vocational training programs and youth-oriented employment training programs for men and women.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mitefsaudi.org\/\">Saudi chapter<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitef.org\/\">MIT Enterprise Forum<\/a>, for which Community Jameel is a key partner, also works to empower women and provide opportunities to excel and grow their skills. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At a regional level, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitefarab.org\">MITEF Pan Arab\u2019s<\/a> main goal is promoting and enriching the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Arab World, while supporting startups and entrepreneurs in the region through a diverse portfolio of programs and initiatives. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitefsaudi.org\">Saudi MITEF chapter<\/a> was founded with the goal of promoting, encouraging and celebrating the entrepreneurship ecosystem specifically in Saudi Arabia through an annual competition.\u00a0 Traditionally, the business sector in the country has been dominated by men, but thanks to programs like these, there has been a huge increase in the number of female entrepreneurs.\u00a0 This is evidenced by the female participation rate in MITEF Saudi Arabia\u2019s annual competition: \u00a0By the end of the 5<sup>th<\/sup> cycle (Q1 2021), the program has over 8,500 applications, more than 44% of which are from women.<\/p>\n<h2>Investing in a better, fairer tomorrow<\/h2>\n<p>Although governments hold the main responsibility for ensuring quality education and equal opportunities for women, the UN\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals are a universal and collective commitment. \u00a0It requires political will, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/themes\/education2030-sdg4\/global-mechanisms\">global<\/a> collaboration and the engagement not only of governments and multinational agencies, but of private capital, of communities and of individuals, in order to tackle the challenges and build systems that are inclusive, equitable and
