ever faced a more serious risk to its future than climate change?\u00a0 It is a threat that has become increasingly prominent in global headlines over the past decade.\u00a0 And rightly so.\u00a0 Climate change is not just an inconvenience that may cause some temporary disruption as we go about our daily lives.\u00a0 It is an existential threat that could change our way of life, our eco-system and our planet . . .\u00a0 \u00a0forever.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Climate change is already increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts, floods and tropical cyclones.\u00a0 It is aggravating water management problems, reducing agricultural production and food security, and increasing health risks.\u00a0 It is also damaging critical infrastructure and interrupting the provision of basic services such water and sanitation, education, energy and transport.\u00a0 And soon may be a driver of both animal and human migration.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lGvzdTCXhys\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-93120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Disaster-protest-146x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"150\" 100vw, 146px\" \/>Scientists are observing changes in the Earth\u2019s climate in every region and across the whole climate system, according to the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/\">IPCC<\/a>) Report<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many of the changes observed in the climate are unprecedented in millennia, if not hundreds of thousands of years, and some of the changes already set in motion\u2014such as continued sea level rise and warming\u2014are irreversible over hundreds to thousands of years.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-93190\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UN-SDG-13-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1378\" height=\"316\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UN-SDG-13-banner.jpg 1378w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/UN-SDG-13-banner-300x69.jpg 300w, the heart of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/climate-change\/\">United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13<\/a>: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-93162\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-226x126.jpg 226w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement.jpg 356w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Paris Agreement<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> set out strict targets to try and prevent irreversible climate change, or at the very least, lessen its worst impacts.\u00a0 The aim is to keep the global temperature rise this century well below 2\u00b0C \u2013 preferably 1.5\u00b0C \u2013 above pre-industrial levels. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, the world would need to achieve net zero carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) emissions by around 2050.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris Agreement also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change, through appropriate financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity building framework.<\/p>\n<h2>Patchy progress . . .<\/h2>\n<p>Although adopted by 196 parties at COP 21 in Paris in 2015, progress towards these targets over the past six years has been mixed, even before the global COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing health crisis caused social and economic havoc across the globe.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-93141\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-2-150x84.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-2-226x126.jpg 226w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Paris-Agreement-2.jpg 354w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>According to scientists, global emissions must be cut to 45% below 2010 levels by 2030 in order to hit the 1.5\u00b0C target.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a>\u00a0 Yet atmospheric concentrations of the major greenhouse gases like CO<sub>2<\/sub> continued to increase in 2020, despite a temporary reduction in emissions related to pandemic-driven reduced economic activity, having already reached a new high the year before<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>2019 was also the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/03\/1059061\">second warmest year on record<\/a> and the end of the warmest decade (2010- 2019) ever recorded<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/our-people\/fady-jameel\/\">Fady Jameel<\/a>, Deputy President and Vice Chairman, <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\">Abdul Latif Jameel<\/a>, discusses in his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/spotlight-by-fady-jameel\/time-for-climate-action-to-go-viral\/\">Spotlight article<\/a>, climate change is not on pause while the world grapples with COVID-19. \u00a0Saving lives and livelihoods requires urgent action to address the accelerating climate emergency.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\">[6]<\/a> provides new estimates of the chances of exceeding the global warming target in the next decades, and finds that unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to close to 1.5\u00b0C or even 2\u00b0C will be beyond our reach.<\/p>\n<p>The report shows that emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are responsible for approximately 1.1\u00b0C of warming since 1850-1900, and finds that averaged over the next 20 years, global temperature is expected to reach or exceed 1.5\u00b0C of warming.<\/p>\n<p>This assessment is based on improved observational datasets to assess historical warming, as well progress in scientific understanding of the response of the climate system to human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_93204\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-93204\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img be done, and how we can prepare.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Committed to a long term vision<\/h2>\n<p>Preparing for the kinds of actions envisaged by the IPCC to combat climate change is not a short-term task, but one that depends on long term thinking, investment and commitment &#8211; three qualities the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/en\/who-we-are\/jameel-family\/\">Jameel Family<\/a> is quietly proud to have demonstrated consistently over the past 75 years.<\/p>\n<p>Active across a diverse a range of important areas, from mobility, renewable energy, energy storage and 300px\" \/>Take water, for example, surely our most precious resource, and one which is in the front line of climate change.\u00a0 According to the UN\u2019s Progress Update on the SDGs<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\">[7]<\/a>, billions of people worldwide still live without safely managed drinking water, safely managed sanitation and basic hygiene services, especially in rural areas and less developed countries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Climate change is making this already challenging situation even worse by its negative effects on the natural environment, such as forests, soils and wetlands, which are major factors in water availability and water quality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/almarwater.com\/\">Almar Water Solutions<\/a>, a specialist provider of technical capabilities for water infrastructure development, is contributing to global efforts to address this situation, as outlined in our Perspectives article on <a 1891px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/energy-and-environmental-services\/energy-overview\/\">Abdul Latif Jameel Energy and Environmental Services<\/a>, Almar has a major stake in <a href=\"https:\/\/almarwater.com\/pf\/muharraq\/\">the Muharraq wastewater treatment plant<\/a> in Bahrain, with a 29-year contract to operate the 100,000 cubic meters\/day wastewater treatment plant, the first 16.5 km deep gravity sewer trunk pipeline in the GCC region and a wastewater collection network. \u00a0\u00a0In addition, it is part of consortium developing one of the world\u2019s largest desalination plants, the now award-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/almar-water-solutions-invest-us-600m-supply-1-8m-people-saudi-arabia-desalinated-water\/\">Shuqaiq 3 IWP<\/a> on the Red Sea cost of Saudi Arabia.\u00a0 On schedule for completion by the end of 2021, this US$ 600m facility has the capacity to deliver 450,000 cubic meters of clean water to around 1.8 million people every day.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oS5w15xO8B0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Almar is rapidly expanding its operations in Latin America, including the acquisition of Chilean water treatment companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osmoflo.com\/\">Osmoflo SpA<\/a> in 2019 and a 50% stake in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energys-almar-water-solutions-doubles-its-chilean-presence-acquiring-50-of-aguas-y-riles-sa\/\">Aguas y Riles SA<\/a> in 2020, as it continues to build-out its regional platform to address issues such as water availability and sanitation in these countries.\u00a0 It also has a growing presence in Egypt, where through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-expands-water-sector-portfolio-with-acquisition-of-58-desalination-plants-in-egypt\/\">acquisition of the Ridgwood Group<\/a>, it now operates 58 desalination plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wSTyyCkDlfM\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Almost as essential as water to today\u2019s society is energy.\u00a0 It powers our cities, heats our homes, supports our water and food systems, and drives our factories.\u00a0 Unfortunately, traditional carbon-based energy sources, like coal, oil and gas, are also the main contributor to climate change, in the form of harmful CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions.\u00a0 That\u2019s why substantially increasing the supply of sustainable, renewable energy is vital to achieving our net zero targets.<\/p>\n<p>As discussed in more detail in a previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/feel-the-power\/\">Abdul Latif Jameel Perspectives article<\/a>, Abdul Latif Jameel Energy\u2019s flagship renewable energy company <a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\/en\/\">Fotowatio Renewable Ventures<\/a> (FRV), , is aiding the transition to sustainable energy and exploring new technologies to tackle climate change.\u00a0 With a presence on five continents, it has developed over 50 renewable energy plants and has a <a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\/en\/projects\/\">project portfolio<\/a> of over 2.5 GW in global solar markets across Australia, the Middle East, India, Africa, USA and Latin America.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Mw5_Te0Fe-A\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In addition, FRV has a dedicated innovation arm, <a href=\"https:\/\/frv.com\/en\/services\/frv-x\/\">FRV-X<\/a>, which is pioneering utility-scale battery storage technology, enabling the supply of renewable energy on a truly 24\/7 basis.\u00a0 FRV-X has already partnered with British developer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harmonyenergy.co.uk\/\">Harmony Energy<\/a> on two battery storage projects in the UK, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energys-frv-harmony-energy-commission-first-megapack-uk-energy-storage-project\/\">Holes Bay<\/a>, Dorset, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energy-supports-development-of-second-utility-scale-battery-storage-project-in-uk\/\">Contego<\/a>, West Sussex, and recently announced plans for the UK\u2019s biggest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Clay Tye in Essex. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nVVeX4oEeXw\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This topic is explored in more depth in this Spotlight <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/fady-m-jameel\/\">Fady Jameel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>FRV-X\u2019s commitment to investing in a more sustainable future is also demonstrated by its involvement in the next generation of hydrogen-fueled public transport systems.\u00a0 The first of these is a partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/fptaximadrid.es\/\">Professional Taxi Federation of Madrid<\/a> to replace at least 1,000 traditional cabs with green <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energys-frv-contributes-to-decarbonizing-public-mobility-with-green-hydrogen\/\">hydrogen-powered vehicles<\/a> by 2026.\u00a0 Abdul Latif Jameel\u2019s long-time automotive partner, Toyota, is supplying the project with its <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.toyota.eu\/toyota-mirai-breaks-world-record-for-distance-driven-with-one-fill-of-hydrogen\/#:~:text=Summary,distance%20driving%20with%20zero%20emissions\">record-breaking<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.toyota.com\/mirai\/\">Toyota Mirai<\/a> fuel cell model, capable of traveling up to 600km with zero environmental impact.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The second hydrogen transport project is in Alicante, the fourth most populated province in Spain, where FRV-X is joining forces with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vectalia.es\/en\/\">Vectalia<\/a> to develop the first large-scale <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/news\/abdul-latif-jameel-energys-frv-and-vectalia-partner-to-develop-first-green-hydrogen-powered-bus-transport-system-in-spain\/\">green hydrogen-powered bus transport system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-89732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/06\/FRV-Alicante-HyVus-1.jpg\" evidence.\u00a0 Originally founded in 2003, J-PAL began its long collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communityjameel.org\/en\">Community Jameel<\/a> in 2005.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anchored by a network of over 261 affiliated professors at universities around the world, J-PAL focuses on a number of critical sectors that are integral to the future of our society, including climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>How does climate change influence global poverty? \u00a0Research shows that climate change disproportionately affects people living in poverty and threatens to reverse decades of progress in global poverty alleviation. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, there is a critical lack of research on the real-world impacts of climate solutions. \u00a0Leaders around the world need more evidence on the effectiveness of technological and policy innovations to implement solutions that address climate change and poverty.\u00a0 This is precisely the area where J-PAL excels, gathering data and evidence from across the globe to help identify the type of policies, projects and strategies that are most effective.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright 300px\" \/>J-PAL\u2019s Environment, Energy, and Climate Change sector measures the real-world impacts of energy and environmental policies, particularly on climate change mitigation, pollution reduction, climate change adaptation, and energy access.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its <a href=\"https:\/\/betterworld.mit.edu\/solutions-at-the-nexus-of-climate-change-and-poverty-alleviation\/?device=mobile\">King Climate Action Initiative<\/a> (K-CAI), for example, focuses on projects within four areas: climate-change mitigation; pollution reduction; adaptation to climate-change impacts; and improving energy access for low-income communities as well as shifting to cleaner sources. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The initiative aims to rigorously evaluate programs reducing the effects of climate change on vulnerable populations and then work with policy makers to scale up the most successful interventions.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cBy testing interventions in the real world and building long-term partnerships with policy makers to scale effective solutions, K-CAI is helping ensure climate research creates meaningful change<\/em>,\u201d says J-PAL Global Executive Director Iqbal Dhaliwal.<\/p>\n<h2>Leveraging the power of private capital<\/h2>\n<p>Channeling private and public capital to invest in research, policies and technologies that could help to reduce or even reverse the worst impacts of climate change is a core aim of both J-WAFS and J-PAL.\u00a0 It is also central to the mission of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jimco.com\/en\/insights\/harnessing-the-power-of-private-capital\">JIMCO Strategic Asset Fund<\/a> , one of three investment funds operated by the <a
