More than 800 million people in developing countries depend for their health and livelihoods on aquatic systems.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/a><sup>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/sup>By 2030, there will be 8.5 billion mouths to feed \u2013 and 600 million of us are already chronically undernourished.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ocean is home to around 80% of all life and currently provides food for three billion humans.<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It could feed six times as many (and that\u2019s not including rivers, lakes, and manmade habitats).<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 But only if we manage aquatic food systems sustainably and fairly.<\/p>\n<p>So, what can we do to ensure we reap the maximum \u2013 sustainable \u2013 benefits from aquatic food? \u00a0How can we improve how it\u2019s produced and how it\u2019s wasted? \u00a0And how do we make sure it provides food security, nutrition and livelihoods to as many people as possible?<\/p>\n<h2>What are aquatic food systems?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-121097\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/World-Fish-150x127.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"127\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/World-Fish-150x127.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/World-Fish-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/World-Fish.jpg 347w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/>Aquatic food includes any plant or animal grown or harvested from water. \u00a0It includes everything from fish and shellfish to algae and synthetic substitutes.<\/p>\n<p>Aquatic food systems encompass everything needed to support and nurture aquatic food and the benefits it provides.\u00a0 As the World Fish Center explains:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<em>An aquatic food system is the complex web of all the elements and activities that relate to foods from water, along with parts of the broader economic, social, and natural environments in which they are embedded.\u00a0 It encompasses the steps from production all the way to consumption, as well as outcomes related to nutrition, public health, food security, social and economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup><strong>[5]<\/strong><\/sup><\/a><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121006\" has numerous benefits beyond its culinary value that make it an essential, if not superior, companion to land-based agriculture in several regards:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plentiful.\u00a0 <\/strong>Aquatic yields are at record highs and can be ramped up considerably with sustainable management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nutritious.\u00a0 <\/strong>Packed with protein and micronutrients, including omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, essential vitamins, and minerals, aquatic foods are typically better for you than many other readily available food sources.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Food security.\u00a0 <\/strong>In 2019, the world consumed 158 million tons of aquatic food \u2013 more than double that of beef and significantly higher than pork and poultry.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Around 3.3 billion people get 20% or more of their average protein intake from aquatic foods.\u00a0 In lower and middle-income countries, aquatic foods are often the main or sole source of protein and essential nutrients<em>.<\/em><a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121013\" livelihoods. <\/strong>Across fisheries and aquaculture, an estimated 62 million people work in primary production alone.<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Asia accounts for the vast share of employment, followed by Africa.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Low-tech, coastal small-scale fisheries (SSF) produce around 40% of global catches and employ 90% of the sector \u2013 sustaining the livelihoods of nearly 500 million people in developing nations.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Good for trade and sustainable development. <\/strong>Aquatic food systems generated a record US $195 billion in 2022.\u00a0 China dominates with exports of US $22.4 billion, followed by Norway (US $15.5 billion) and Vietnam (US $11.2 billion).<a href=\"#_ftn12\" name=\"_ftnref12\"><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Greener than agriculture. <\/strong>The ocean is the world&#8217;s largest carbon sink, and aquatic foods release less carbon than <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/spotlight-by-fady-jameel\/farming-for-the-future\/\">land-based crops<\/a> and livestock.<a href=\"#_ftn13\" name=\"_ftnref13\"><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Aquatic food production is at record highs<\/h2>\n<p>The world produces five times more aquatic food compared to six decades ago.\u00a0 Traditional fishing production has remained consistent for decades.\u00a0 Aquaculture production, however, has increased by 6.6% since 2020 and now contributes over 57% of aquatic animal products for human consumption.<a href=\"#_ftn14\" name=\"_ftnref14\"><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_121124\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121124\" style=\"width: 2560px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-121124\" with round net cages in Anemokambi bay area near Galaxidi, Greece.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the 1960s, around two-thirds of aquatic animal production was eaten by humans.\u00a0 Today, it&#8217;s 90%.\u00a0 Between 1961 and 2021, consumption rose by 483%.\u00a0 That\u2019s around 3% growth per year, almost double the average world population growth rate.<a href=\"#_ftn15\" name=\"_ftnref15\"><sup>[15]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Evolving consumer preferences, new technology, and increased prosperity have driven this dramatic increase in consumption per capita.<\/p>\n<p>And production hasn\u2019t peaked yet.\u00a0 The world is projected to produce 205 million tons of aquatic animals for human use by 2032.\u00a0 Around 111 million tons will come from aquaculture and 94 million tons from capture fisheries.\u00a0 Produce for human consumption will account for 90% of production, rising from 20.7 kg in 2022 to 21.3 kg per capita in 2032.<a href=\"#_ftn16\" name=\"_ftnref16\"><sup>[16]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With proper management and investment in innovation, aquatic food production could produce six times more food than today \u2013 more than two-thirds of the animal protein we need to feed future generations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121020\" these impressive numbers\u2014and in much part, because of them\u2014aquatic food populations are declining.\u00a0 In 1974, 90% of stocks monitored by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) were considered within biologically sustainable levels.\u00a0 As of 2021, that fell to just 62.3%.<a href=\"#_ftn17\" name=\"_ftnref17\"><sup>[17]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The main culprits are overfishing, changing ecosystems and waste.<\/p>\n<h2>How much aquatic food are we wasting?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-121090\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SDG-Target-12.3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SDG-Target-12.3.jpg 133w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SDG-Target-12.3-102x150.jpg 102w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 133px) 100vw, 133px\" \/>Reducing aquatic food loss and waste is crucial for improving food system sustainability, supporting Target 12.3 of the 2030 <a href=\"https:\/\/alj.com\/en\/perspective\/towards-2030-united-in-progress\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, which aims to halve per capita global food waste by 2030.<a href=\"#_ftn18\" name=\"_ftnref18\"><sup>[18]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to get a true assessment of the magnitude of waste.\u00a0 But it\u2019s a lot.\u00a0 According to FAO estimates, in 2021, global edible aquatic food loss and waste (FLW) totaled approximately 23.8 million tons, equating to 14.8% of total aquatic food production.\u00a0 The largest losses occurred during processing (39%) and production of wild-capture fisheries (35%).<a href=\"#_ftn19\" name=\"_ftnref19\"><sup>[19]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>FLW varies by region.\u00a0 Lower and middle-income countries lose more during post-harvest and processing due to inadequate handling practices and infrastructure, while higher-income nations lose more due to consumer behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Loss and waste occur at every stage along the value chain<a href=\"#_ftn20\" name=\"_ftnref20\"><sup>[20]<\/sup><\/a>, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Discards at sea: <\/strong>Many &#8216;low value&#8217; aquatic foods are thrown overboard and often die from physical trauma or susceptibility to predators shortly after.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aquaculture: <\/strong>Disease, escape, parasites, deformity, substandard conditions, and pollution all impact yield.<\/li>\n<li><strong>At-sea processing: <\/strong>By-products include fish heads, tails, viscera, blood, scales, and other organic materials, which are thrown back into the sea.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Small-scale fisheries (SSF): <\/strong>A 2014 estimate put post-harvest fish loss in SSFs at between 20 percent and 75 percent \u2013 mostly due to insufficient cold storage, transport, handling, and training.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Processing on land: <\/strong>Whereas lower-income countries tend to purchase fish whole and fresh, higher-income countries tend to prefer fileted, canned, and ready-to-eat products, which results in more waste.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Retail and food service: <\/strong>Products contaminated, or exceeding sell-by date are thrown away, caused by poor inventory management and improper handling and storage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Household consumption <\/strong>Consumers throwing away bits of products they don\u2019t want, didn\u2019t eat or failed to store properly. This is less of a problem in lower- and middle-income countries where people tend to use whole fish fresh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121027\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ALJ-Aquatic-Food-Systems_004-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1809\" sustainable?<\/h2>\n<p>According to World Fish Center:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA<em>n aquatic food system is sustainable when it ensures food security and nutrition for all in such a way that does not compromise the economic, social and environmental bases to generate food security and nutrition for future generations<\/em>.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn21\" name=\"_ftnref21\"><sup>[21]<\/sup><\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, how are we doing?\u00a0 As per the table below, just 62% of fish resources are sustainably exploited \u2013 down from 90% in the 70s.\u00a0 That said, 78.9% of the biggest sources of fish in the same year were fished sustainably, which suggests proper management can a difference.<a href=\"#_ftn22\" name=\"_ftnref22\"><sup>[22]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-121034\" improvements are being made in the processing and use of aquatic foods, but more needs to be done to reduce waste and upscale sustainable production, chiefly<a href=\"#_ftn23\" name=\"_ftnref23\"><sup>[23]<\/sup><\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Promote innovative technologies<\/li>\n<li>Implement circular economy solutions<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate access of producers, particularly small-scale ones, to regional and international markets<\/li>\n<li>Make aquatic foods available to all consumers<\/li>\n<li>Effective management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Is aquaculture the answer?<\/h2>\n<p>Aquaculture is the cultivation of aquatic organisms for part or all of their life cycle.\u00a0 It ranges in sophistication from small-scale household operations to large multinational companies \u2013 using tanks, ponds, or net pens in open water environments.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, aquaculture production reached 94.4 million tons, exceeding capture fisheries and providing a critical source of sustenance and livelihoods for coastal and inland communities.<a href=\"#_ftn24\" name=\"_ftnref24\"><sup>[24]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Easier to manage than wild-caught aquatic food, aquaculture delivers high yields of specific species \u2013 with significant scope to reduce loss through technology, training, and investment.\u00a0 However, the sector is dominated by relatively few countries, with China, India, and Indonesia leading the pack.\u00a0 Africa and Asia, the largest producers of aquatic food, are yet to leverage their full potential.<\/p>\n<p>New research and strategies are focusing on enhancing aquaculture production while reducing aquatic food loss:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Alternative protein sources in fish meals<\/strong>: such as plant-based proteins, microalgae, and insect meal, could reduce dependency on fish stocks; microalgae-based feeds have been shown to improve growth and increase antioxidant activity in cultured fish.<a href=\"#_ftn25\" name=\"_ftnref25\"><sup>[25]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Training and certification: <\/strong>will help to minimize animal stress during harvesting and subsequent loss due to improper handling.<a href=\"#_ftn26\" name=\"_ftnref26\"><sup>[26]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Selective breeding and genetic modification: <\/strong>can enhance disease resistance, growth rates, and other factors to generate more resilient and productive populations.<a href=\"#_ftn27\" name=\"_ftnref27\"><sup>[27]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Real-time monitoring: <\/strong>using sensors enables early disease detection and timely interventions to contain outbreaks and minimize losses.<a href=\"#_ftn28\" name=\"_ftnref28\"><sup>[28]<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How to tackle waste and increase yield<\/h2>\n<p>Aquaculture will play a vital role but won\u2019t be enough on its own.\u00a0 The global aquaculture industry must adopt a whole ecosystem approach to protect environments and livelihoods while ensuring animal health and food safety.\u00a0 The WEF lists several interventions to mitigate FLW across aquatic food systems:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" materials.<a href=\"#_ftn31\" name=\"_ftnref31\"><sup>[31]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Keep it cool<\/h3>\n<p>Efficient transport and especially temperature control are critical to avoid food perishing \u2013 a significant problem in longer supply chains and lower-income areas.\u00a0 Solar-powered freezers offer a relatively affordable way to keep fish cool from catch to market.\u00a0 In high-income countries, large-scale fisheries can equip vessels with blast freezers to quickly freeze catches and prevent spoilage due to bacterial growth, oxidation, and enzymatic reactions.<\/p>\n<h3>Integrate emerging tech<\/h3>\n<p>AI, big data analytics, blockchain, and 3D printing are helping to improve transparency and traceability, improve market trend predictability, address supply chain inefficiencies, optimize production processes, and enable automated, custom packaging methods.<\/p>\n<p>AI and big data analytics, in particular, can help to optimize feed and disease management and reduce mortality to increase yields.\u00a0 AI is also improving product distribution by optimizing supply chain logistics and demand forecasting, reducing unnecessary transport and losses from poor sales.<\/p>\n<h3>Encourage consumers to eat more of the catch<\/h3>\n<p>Promoting alternative, underused products can help to reduce demand from wasteful ones \u2013 often using cuisines from different cultures to inspire consumers.\u00a0 For example, canning has minimal loss compared to filets.\u00a0 Spain is the European leader in canned food, producing more than 343,000 tons of product weight valued at \u20ac1,500 million.<a href=\"#_ftn32\" name=\"_ftnref32\"><sup>[32]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 US canned fish sales, meanwhile, have increased from US$ 2.3 billion in 2018 to over US$ 2.7 billion in 2023.<a href=\"#_ftn33\" name=\"_ftnref33\"><sup>[33]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Likewise, fish collars (known as Kama in Asia) have begun to gain traction in Western markets \u2013 a nutritious way to ensure consumers eat more of the whole product and reduce waste.<a href=\"#_ftn34\" name=\"_ftnref34\"><sup>[34]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Level up skills<\/h3>\n<p>Improved handling, processing, storage, and transport will help to ensure more high-quality foods reach the table.\u00a0 The FAO has developed an online course, best practice handbooks, and assessment methods to help reduce waste across the supply chain.\u00a0 Training promotes sustainability, more investment in technology, and, ultimately, higher margins.\u00a0 Raising awareness amongst consumers about proper handling, storage, and meal planning will also help to reduce waste.<\/p>\n<h3>Collaborate<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-121083\" src=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SDG-Champions-12.3-300x90.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"90\" near-expiry, or misshapen food to consumers and charities, reducing waste.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The WEF calls for more industry stakeholders to establish effective measurement, reporting, and targets across the supply chain to lower operational costs and reduce waste.<a href=\"#_ftn35\" name=\"_ftnref35\"><sup>[35]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 Gear manufacturers should also collaborate with fishing operators to find new ways to minimize the catch and discard of undesirable species.<\/p>\n<h3>Tighten up policies and regulations<\/h3>\n<p>Most policies rely on voluntary guidelines rather than enforceable regulations.\u00a0 Instruments like the Codex Alimentarius Code of Practice for Fish and Fishery Products, established by the FAO and WHO, offer valuable recommendations but lack international recognition, limiting their impact on reducing FLW.<a href=\"#_ftn36\" name=\"_ftnref36\"><sup>[36]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The FAO&#8217;s \u2018Blue Transformation\u2019 roadmap provides strategies to halve global food loss and waste by 2030.\u00a0 It sets out a vision for expanding aquatic food systems to improve nutritious and affordable diets for vulnerable populations and foster equitable growth, especially for communities reliant on fisheries and aquaculture.<a href=\"#_ftn37\" name=\"_ftnref37\"><sup>[37]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 The initiative promotes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sustainable aquaculture intensification and expansion<\/strong>: Increase global aquaculture production by up to 40% by 2030 to meet growing food needs and provide income and employment opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Effective fisheries management<\/strong>: Support the development of management systems that restore fisheries resources and ecosystems to a healthy state.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upgraded food chains<\/strong>: Implement innovative practices and technologies to reduce loss and waste, improve traceability and transparency, facilitate trade, and enhance market access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although voluntary, such programs and standards can still influence policy-making.\u00a0 The Codex Code of Practice&#8217;s principles, for instance, contributed to the European Commission&#8217;s Regulation No 853\/2004, setting hygiene standards for aquatic foods in the EU.\u00a0 This suggests that while guidelines alone are insufficient to drive change, they can spur legislative advancements when backed by momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Specific regulation for FLW lags behind agricultural sectors.\u00a0 Policymakers must focus on collaboration, data collection, and consumer education to create evidence-based policies that incentivize reduced FLW without stifling business.<\/p>\n<p>NGOs play a role in raising consumer awareness and promoting whole fish use, reflecting sustainable practices from various cultures.\u00a0 The growing recognition of aquatic food systems in international forums, such as the UN Food Systems Summit and climate change negotiations, underscores their increasing importance.<\/p>\n<h2>Take the plunge<\/h2>\n<p>Aquatic food is the most fortuitous food source we have. Plentiful, nutritious and easily available, it meets essential calorific and protein needs, improves health, lifts people out of poverty, and supports sustainable growth. Through increased awareness, coordinated effort, and continued technological innovation, we can secure this bountiful, vital resource for future generations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a
