they&#8217;re doing it right now.\u00a0 Fortunately, they have free access to highly advanced temperature regulation systems:\u00a0 their own bodies.\u00a0 If you were to find yourself under the glaring Indian sun this very moment, working side-by-side with a farm laborer, you would probably be more worried about losing your mind than losing excess heat.\u00a0 But your body would know what to do.\u00a0 Your blood vessels would dilate, allowing blood to transfer its warmth to the surroundings.\u00a0 And, crucially, you would sweat.<\/p>\n<p>In 1902, Willis Carrier figured out how to keep us cool by extracting moisture from the air, when he designed the first modern air-conditioning system.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\"><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0When it comes to air-conditioning for the human body, though, evolution beat him to, by <em>giving up<\/em> moisture to the air.\u00a0 When our sweat evaporates, it takes heat with it.\u00a0 As long as we drink plenty of water, we can always spare some of it to cool down by sweating.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a highly effective method that has served us well for millennia and allowed us to colonize some of the hottest places on the earth.\u00a0 But it&#8217;s not foolproof.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes sweating doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Under certain conditions, it is literally <em>impossible<\/em> for sweat to evaporate, meaning there is no way for our bodies to cool themselves down. \u00a0This life-threatening phenomenon is measured using a system known as the &#8216;wet-bulb temperature&#8217;.\u00a0 Such extreme conditions used to be rare, but thanks to climate change, they are now \u00a0occurring with alarming regularity in some parts of the world.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens when we can\u2019t cool down<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87134\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87134\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-87134\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Elfatih-Eltahir-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"Elfatih Eltahir, Professor of Hydrology &amp; Climate, MIT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Humans need to keep their core body temperature around 37.5 degrees Celsius (\u00b0C) or 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit (\u00b0F).\u00a0 As it gets hotter, your body works harder to cool down.\u00a0 When your blood vessels dilate, they lower blood pressure, making the heart work harder to pump blood.\u00a0 If the pressure drops too low, your organs won&#8217;t get enough blood, and the risk of heart attacks rises.\u00a0 At the same time, you lose fluids and salts through sweat.<\/p>\n<p>If your temperature keeps rising, you will experience the symptoms of heat exhaustion, including faintness, cramps, and extreme thirst.\u00a0 Long-term exposure to heat stress can lead to kidney stones and heart problems.\u00a0 That&#8217;s if you&#8217;re lucky. \u00a0If you can&#8217;t cool down at all, you enter heat stroke: confusion, loss of consciousness, organ failure, and death.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t get out of the heat, sweating is your only lifeline.<\/p>\n<p>Elfatih Eltahir, Professor of Hydrology and Climate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a global expert in the wet-bulb phenomenon<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\"><sup>[3]<\/sup><\/a>, explains it like this:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe humans are equipped to deal with hot and dry environments, if we have enough water.\u00a0 If you keep \u00a0hydrating yourself, you sweat, and the sweat evaporates, and that cools your body. [&#8230;] If you add humidity to that equation, it basically interferes with the natural process by which humans can cope with heat distress.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How the wet-bulb temperature works<\/h2>\n<p>The wet-bulb temperature is an indication of how much the human body can cool itself down by sweating.\u00a0 It is measured by wrapping a thermometer&#8217;s bulb in a wet cloth and allowing the water to evaporate naturally.\u00a0 The lowest temperature measured is the wet-bulb temperature.<\/p>\n<p>This temperature is almost always cooler than the temperature recorded by a regular (i.e., dry) thermometer.\u00a0 This is because the bulb is losing heat through the evaporating water: the faster the water evaporates; the lower the thermometer&#8217;s temperature will be relative to the air temperature.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ALJ-Wet-Bulb-Temperature.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"2181\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The evaporation rate is directly influenced by the absolute temperature and how much additional moisture the air can hold, known as the relative humidity.\u00a0 Hotter air can absorb more water vapor at a faster rate than cooler air.\u00a0 However, as the air absorbs more water vapor and becomes increasingly humid, there is less room for additional water vapor, and the rate of evaporation slows.\u00a0 Relative humidity of 0% means the air is completely dry. 100% means it can&#8217;t get any wetter.<\/p>\n<p>That means no matter how much you sweat, it won\u2019t evaporate.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s a dangerous temperature?<\/h2>\n<p>This isn\u2019t just interesting science.\u00a0 It\u2019s a life-threatening situation.\u00a0 So much so that in the 1950s, the US military used wet-bulb temperatures (WBT) to devise guidelines for keeping soldiers safe.\u00a0 When the WBT reaches 29\u00b0C (84\u00b0F), it&#8217;s recommended to stop exercising if you&#8217;re not acclimatized. \u00a0Anything above that is classed as an \u2018extreme\u2019 danger, and the risk of heatstroke rises dramatically.<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\"><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 When the wet-bulb temperature is pushing 35\u00b0C (95\u00b0F), a healthy person may not be able to survive outdoors for more than six hours.<a href=\"#_ftn5\" name=\"_ftnref5\"><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the humidity keeps rising, eventually, the wet-bulb temperature will equal the actual temperature.\u00a0 In other words, despite being soaked in water, the wet-bulb won\u2019t cool down at all. \u00a0And neither would anyone else unlikely enough to still be around.<\/p>\n<h2>Humidity makes heat kill faster<\/h2>\n<p>If the relative humidity is 100%, there is no way you can cool yourself down by sweating. \u00a0But it doesn&#8217;t have to be that high to spell danger.\u00a0 Similarly, the actual temperature could be over 50\u00b0C (122\u00b0F), well above the human body&#8217;s ideal core temperature, but as long as the air is dry enough, your sweat will evaporate and help to cool you down.\u00a0 It all depends on the relationship between temperature and humidity.\u00a0 The higher the humidity, the lower the actual temperature that can cause health problems (and vice versa).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87153\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87153\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-87153 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Al Ula, Saudi Arabia\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-150x113.jpg 150w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/media.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Al-Ula-Saudi-Arabia-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-87153\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Al Ula, Saudi Arabia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For example, in the context of the Middle East, Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, is in the middle of the desert.\u00a0 Dubai, in the UAE, is on the Arabian Gulf coast. The temperature in Riyadh is much hotter than the temperature in Dubai, in general.\u00a0 However, the wet-bulb temperature in Dubai is significantly higher than in Riyadh, because Riyadh\u2019s desert air is much drier &#8211; and therefore able to absorb more moisture &#8211; than coastal Dubai, where the air is already very moisture heavy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can sunbathe in higher temperatures than would kill you.\u00a0 For example, if the actual temperature is 32\u00b0C (90\u00b0F) and the relative humidity is 95%, that&#8217;s enough to hit a dangerous 85\u00b0F \u00a0wet-bulb temperature.\u00a0 If the humidity is just 45%, the actual temperature would have to be 40\u00b0C (104\u00b0F) or more to trigger the same wet-bulb temperature.<a href=\"#_ftn6\" name=\"_ftnref6\"><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Terms like &#8220;relative humidity&#8221; and &#8220;wet-bulb temperature&#8221; can seem a little, well, dry. \u00a0Plus, there are those who say, we&#8217;ve survived heat like this before.\u00a0 Why can&#8217;t we do it again?<\/p>\n<h2>Are we as adaptable as we think?<\/h2>\n<p>The truth is that most humans have always lived in regions with temperatures between 6\u00b0C (43\u00b0F) to 28\u00b0C (82\u00b0F).\u00a0 This is the sweet spot for human health and food production.\u00a0 But as climate change creates greater extremes of weather, the sweet spot is shrinking.\u00a0 As humans, we are particularly vulnerable because the land is warming faster than the oceans, and most population growth is in already hot regions of Africa and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>A global temperature increase of 3\u00b0C will mean the average human is 7.5\u00b0C warmer.\u00a0 By the end of the century, around 30% of us will live in extreme heat, defined as an average temperature of 29\u00b0C (84\u00b0F).\u00a0 On their own, these temperatures are a significant cause for concern.\u00a0 But the wet-bulb temperature is a different beast.\u00a0 As the humidity rises simultaneously, we&#8217;ll see more and more days where the wet-bulb temperature exceeds 32\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87100\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ALJ-Temperature-Rise.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1991\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Who is most at risk?<\/h2>\n<p>Anyone can be affected by heat, especially as the wet-bulb temperature rises.\u00a0 Some people are more vulnerable than others, though.\u00a0 They include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>People who can\u2019t take shelter.\u00a0 <\/strong>Anyone working long hours in the heat with outbreaks, from manual laborers and farmers to medical professionals in stuffy protective clothing treating COVID.\u00a0 Some people also avoid drinking enough fluids because they don&#8217;t want to go to the toilet during work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The old, very young, and those with underlying conditions.\u00a0<\/strong> Heat stress takes a toll on the body, which is harder to cope with as you age.\u00a0 Similarly, people with conditions like heart disease and diabetes are at particular risk.\u00a0 Diabetes, for instance, can make people lose water faster and reduce their ability to sweat.\u00a0 Children and people with mental health conditions like dementia often need special supervision and assistance to stay cool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Marten Scheffer, Professor of Aquatic Ecology and Water Quality Management at Wageningen University in the Netherlands<a href=\"#_ftn8\" name=\"_ftnref8\"><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/a>, explains, <em>&#8220;I think it is fair to say that average temperatures over 29\u00b0C are unlivable.\u00a0 You&#8217;d have to move or adapt.\u00a0 But there are limits to adaptation.\u00a0 If you have enough money and energy, you can use air conditioning and fly in food, and then you might be OK.\u00a0 But that is not the case for most people.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We think of ourselves as very adaptable because we use clothes, heating, and air conditioning.\u00a0 But, in fact, the vast majority of people live \u2013 and have always lived \u2013 inside a climate niche that is now moving as never before [&#8230;] There will be more change in the next 50 years than in the past 6,000 years.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>Rising wet-bulb temperatures threaten the Hajj<\/h2>\n<p>The Hajj is the annual pilgrimage to Islam&#8217;s holiest city, Mecca, in Saudi Arabia.\u00a0 All the world&#8217;s 1.8 billion Muslims are obliged to participate in the Hajj at least once in their lifetime if they are healthy enough and can afford the trip.<\/p>\n<p>The Hajj moves according to the lunar calendar, which means that it occurs at a different time each year.\u00a0 This isn&#8217;t a problem during cooler months, but during summer, the heat can be stifling and will only worsen at the current rate of global warming.<a href=\"#_ftn7\" name=\"_ftnref7\"><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ritual takes about five days to complete, and up to 30 hours must be spent outside.\u00a0 Many pilgrims are elderly, compounding the danger.\u00a0 If conditions continue to worsen, this important event may not be possible for millions of Muslims. \u00a0Officials already provide cooling for some Hajj participants and have enlarged certain areas to reduce overcrowding. \u00a0In future years, it may be necessary to strictly limit the number of participants altogether.<\/p>\n<p>There have already been deadly stampedes during the Hajj: one in 1990 killing 1,462 people and another in 2015 that left 769 dead and 934 injured.\u00a0 Both these years coincided with peaks in temperature and humidity.\u00a0 Heat stress could have triggered or contributed to the deadly events.<\/p>\n<p>The next time the Hajj will occur during the hotter summer months will be 2047 to 2052 and 2079 to 2086.\u00a0 The heat will be close to unbearable even if climate change is significantly diminished.\u00a0 And even more dangerous if not.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>What will be the worst-hit regions?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-87093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/ALJ-Greenhouse.jpg\" alt=\"Greenhouse gas emissions\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1232\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given the most vulnerable people&#8217;s risk profile, those at greatest danger live in warmer, densely populated countries.\u00a0 And, as with much of climate change, that means developing regions will be especially susceptible.\u00a0 The most crucial factor is how many people will be subjected to dangerous wet-bulb temperatures with limited or no access to shelter.<\/p>\n<p>Hotter countries with more affluent populations will be better able to stay cool. \u00a0For example, the Arabian Gulf is projected to experience some of the highest temperatures anywhere on earth, according to a study from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).<a href=\"#_ftn9\" name=\"_ftnref9\"><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 However, its population is relatively small, has widespread access to air conditioning, and not much agricultural land.\u00a0 Contrast to South Asia, where a significant proportion of the population works in stifling conditions on subsistence farms.\u00a0 India, Bangladesh, and southern Pakistan\u2014home to around 1.5 billion people\u2014will get the worst of the heat.<a href=\"#_ftn10\" name=\"_ftnref10\"><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 It&#8217;s already proving fatal. \u00a0In 2015, 3,500 people in Pakistan and India died during one of the deadliest heat waves.<\/p>\n<p>To put the pace of change into context, currently, around 2% of Indians sometimes get exposed to 32\u00b0C wet-bulb temperatures.\u00a0 By 2100, according to the MIT study, it will be 70%.\u00a0 And around 2% will experience 35\u00b0C wet-bulb temperatures \u2013 right at the threshold of survivability.<\/p>\n<h2>China could be the worst affected<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_87141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-87141\" style=\"width: 1006px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-87141 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/app\/uploads\/2021\/03\/North-China-Plain.jpg\" alt=\"North China Plain\" width=\"1006\" height=\"560\" Image credit: MIT<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to another study, the North China Plain (NCP) is at the greatest risk anywhere on earth.<a href=\"#_ftn11\" name=\"_ftnref11\"><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/a>\u00a0 This is China&#8217;s most agriculturally important region and also its most populous.\u00a0 The area has experienced a significant increase in extreme heatwaves over the last 50 years.\u00a0 In that time, the NCP has warmed almost twice as fast as the global average \u2014 0.24\u00b0C per decade versus 0.13\u00b0C.\u00a0 In 2013, extreme heatwaves lasted for up to 50 days, with temperatures exceeding 38\u00b0C (104\u00b0F) in some places.\u00a0 Dozens died in Shanghai, as East China&#8217;s largest city witnessed temperatures rise to their highest point in 141-years.\u00a0 At the current global warming rate, even more deadly heatwaves will descend on the region between 2070 and 2100.<\/p>\n<p>The NCP is actually relatively dry.\u00a0 However, intense heat combined with mass irrigation is predicted to raise the relative humidity and trigger dangerous wet-bulb temperatures. \u00a0Irrigation has a cooling effect at ground level, but its contribution to humidity outweighs it, and water vapor is in itself a potent greenhouse gas.\u00a0 The study reckons that irrigation alone adds an extra half-degree Celsius in warming to the region.<\/p>\n<h2>How can we stay cool?<\/h2>\n<p>There are well-established strategies for people to mitigate the worst effects of heat in the short-term.\u00a0 When temperatures rise, the most familiar advice includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drink lots of fluids before work<\/li>\n<li>Avoid diuretics like tea and coffee<\/li>\n<li>Rehydrate regularly<\/li>\n<li>Stay aerobically fit; it increases your heat tolerance<\/li>\n<li>Beware the signs of heat stress; if you start getting stomach cramps or faint or nauseous, take a break<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These measures are easier said than done for many people, particularly for low-income farmers and manual laborers working in the sun all day. That\u2019s why I believe there is an urgent need for governments, public organizations, and businesses to provide additional support, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide water, shelter, and air conditioning<\/li>\n<li>Prevent people from working when wet-bulb temperatures reach dangerous levels<\/li>\n<li>Use crowd control<\/li>\n<li>Build-in low humidity locations, e.g., away from low-lying valleys and warm oceans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, these measures only treat the symptoms, not the cause.<\/p>\n<h2>The real answer is obvious<\/h2>\n<p>In reality, the only way to limit the frequency of dangerous wet-bulb temperatures is to reduce global warming, a cause to which I am deeply committed.\u00a0 To do that, we must dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a coordinated international effort by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/rebooting-our-climate-the-sustainable-energy-transition\/\">ramping up renewable<\/a> power; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/not-just-hot-air-why-decarbonizing-industry-is-so-vital-to-a-sustainable-future\/\">decarbonizing industry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/spotlight-by-fady-jameel\/we-need-clean-energy-to-recharge-our-economies\/\">energy<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/recharging-ahead-how-to-keep-electric-vehicles-topped-up\/\">transport<\/a>, agriculture, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alj.com\/en\/perspective\/fresh-water-fresh-ideas-can-renewable-energy-be-the-future-of-desalination\/\">freshwater production<\/a>;
