Recognizing International Mother Earth Day 2021
In recognition of International Mother Earth Day, Abdul Latif Jameel is aligning with the United Nations’ call to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
Now is the time to adopt a different mindset to ensure we pass on a world that is truly worth saving to future generations.
“We must act decisively to protect our planet from both the coronavirus and the existential threat of climate disruption”
– Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General
It’s clear in the last year that the overriding topic of conversation, focus and concern is COVID-19 and the aftermath of a global health pandemic. One of the not-so-obvious problems with crises like this is that they take your eye off the ball when it comes to the pressing issues facing our planet today.
The accelerating threat of climate change is suffering a dangerous relegation from a position of ‘too big to ignore’… to ‘we’re too busy to tackle this’.
Today, on International Mother Earth Day (April 22, 2021), it is an appropriate time to remind ourselves that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people . . .
and planet. At Abdul Latif Jameel, we are aligning with the United Nations’ call to promote harmony with nature and the Earth.
The pandemic poses huge public health and economic risks, but climate change has the power to do even greater harm.
Displacing hundreds of millions of people, rendering large swathes of our world uninhabitable, driving mass migration and even conflict, and costing multiple trillions of dollars to rectify.
“We will not be able to avoid the devastating tipping points that would shatter the global economy and pose existential human threats. The costs of inaction are staggering – US$ 600 trillion by the end of the century.”
– Christiana Figueres, Former UN Climate Change Head
Now is the time to adopt a different mindset: long-term thinking for long-term rewards. Post-pandemic economic stimulus and investment, with sustainable and environmentally aligned priorities are the only ways to guarantee we can pass on to future generations a world that is truly worth saving.
