Anyone who has peered over the edge into the caldera of an active volcano will know that there is a lot of latent power there. Every so often, we get a glimpse of it. When Mount Tambora in Indonesia erupted in 1815, it was some ten times more powerful than the more famous 1883 Mt. Krakataou (Krakatoa) and blew out a cloud of sulfate so massive it engulfed the Earth. It cooled temperatures and disrupted weather patterns to such as extent there was widespread crop failure and famine was rife.
