An Abdul Latif Jameel Motors Associate has been honored by his peers and management for his ‘kaizen’ thinking and application, displaying the true essence of the continuous improvement philosophy.

Abdullah Osman Abdi, a driver at Abdul Latif Jameel Motors Toyota showroom and service center on Madinah Road in Jeddah, approached his manager Mohsen Turki Shikh Sienah, Stock Yard Supervisor, with an idea to improve efficiency and productivity for the team of drivers managing the vehicles in the stock yard.

The dedicated lanes for the Toyota Madinah Road branch at the central stock yard were located more than 150 meters from the main exit gate, which meant the team of drivers were all walking 10 to 15 minutes per car in significantly high Saudi temperatures; with 20 to 40 cars being moved each day (approximately 600 vehicles per month), this caused additional time and effort from each driver.  Abdullah identified dedicated lanes much closer to the exit gate, discussed the idea with Mohsen, who approached the management of the Central Warehouses in Al Khomrah to change the lane allocation.

The result?  Increased productivity almost immediately, saving time and effort, more cars being moved, and a huge burden lifted from the team of drivers.

“It was taking too much time to move the cars and we were wasting time between the exit gate and our dedicated lane to pick up customer cars,” said Abdullah.  “What used to take three to four hours is now being done in 15 minutes.  It was a special day when Mr Hassan Jameel met me, I was overwhelmed and very happy, and I feel very much appreciated.”
